Long arms, quick off the ball, pretty rough, obviously has some strength. Made some plays as a rookie. He has everything you need to succeed. I think he'll be pretty good. He'll start at DE and move around the line. Still got a ways to go, but that's looking like a helluva pickup right about now.

Also he will start with DLaw out, but in Game 5 and later he will be a situational backup playing against OT's that DLaw has already given fits to. He could be a complete beast in that kind of limited role.

I was excited about him in the DT rotation but I am not sure what he's going to be as a DE.

If he turns out to be good then we can't sign any other pass rushers according to Cowboyroy.

Lay the name calling out...

I think a little excitement watching a player selected to be developed, showing promise actually was in order...for a fan.

Very very anxious to see Irving in preseason. I really think the Cowboys FO hit on this player. Love reading this stuff. Thanks for another outstanding article Bob!

Yep, there is that mindset we talked about.

I just made a fun wager with JStopper about the defense. Care to make one with David Irvin for the season? Scared?

He was outstanding in that game against the eagles last year.

Still feels a lot like when this team went and took Kenyon Coleman from the raiders and then he served as a very valuable player here for years.

Im very excited to see him in action. I liked the flashes he showed last season and this team can use the help at defensive end. Given what looks like a miss on Randy Gregory, it would be great to balance things out with a big hit in Irving.

All of the reports I've heard and read on him have been excellent, and there have been a lot of them!

Potentially having two outstanding 3 technique at DT would be a blessing especially on 3rd down and passing situations. Also rotation will keep both fresh. Crawford hasn't been able to stay healthy so Irvin will be very valuable. 4 DT with McClain, Crawford, Thorton and Irvin would be very formidable.

Our DE issue still hasn't been solved though but if DTs can provide pressure up the middle and handle the runs that would go a long ways.

I think you're missing something here. Maliek Collins was drafted to play DT, and likely at the 3-technique. I think the plan is for Irving to help out more at DE than DT.

Stop sign? I still get a loud chuckle when I recall: Back in High School, my Aunt set me up with a date. The girl was lovely, but tiny. We were driving home from a dance, when she said stop right here. I did, and she got out of the passenger door and grabbed a huge sign and support...opened the back door, and tossed it in the back seat. She said she wanted it for her room. I still laugh about that tiny girl manhandling that large sign!
Back when I was stationed In Hawaii me an a couple friends went to an on base concert at the E Club. I left a bit earlier did (cant recall why) and when I got up the next morning and went outside for a cig I heard the duty NCO mentioning an incident with the two guys I was with. When I went to go ask one of them what happened he told things got a little out of control and they stole a street sign and got picked by the MPs. My response " What are you, 15?" lol. Both got very light NJPs for that, but they got non rec'd for promotion. Leaving early was probably the difference between me getting out a Sgt.and getting out a Cpl.

If you look at the plays Sturm provided, most were with him at the 3-Technique where he could use his quickness and length. In some of those plays, he is what we pretend Crawford is.

His ability as a pure end in a 4-3 is something I am not sure about.
I think he should quality run defender at DE. Stout with the agility to chase the play. I think he is a guy that moves inside on passing down

At this stage his career I think he could be a 3 down player for us easily if we take that road. But right now I don't is a 3 down player at any one position. Dont think he is a pass down DE and dont think he is a run down DT

Irving is one of the defensive players I will be looking at more than others during these games to see his improvement.
He is my pet cat on D this year.

I hope Sturm continues to post his game analysis this year. Great stuff.
I've been saying since last season Irving is going to a good player. I can see him breaking out this season. The Lord only knows we NEED him to.

If it wasn't for his jersey number I would have never guessed he was DL looking at the lead picture. He's got Merton Hanks Neck syndrome. Definitely at the top of my watch list vs the Rams, followed closely by Tapper.

As lacking as we are in sure things, we have a bunch of intriguing prospects - Irving, Tapper, Collins, Okoye, McAdoo, Russell, Mayowa, Coe. Not even including Gregory.

Forgot about Collins. But not convinced that Irvin is better at DE. He seems to play better at DT. Hope he can play DE since it's a position of need.

Can't remember the last time we had this potential and depth at DT

Marinelli said the same thing his first season with the Cowboys, said depth was unreal and all his starters were pro bowlers or pro bowl level talent. But I have been a Irving "hoper" since before he became a Cowboy but Irving has been on everyone's radar, so no surprise. I have similar hopes for McAdoo, he will be better than Mayowa IMO.
