There are plenty of indicators of success for any defense that runs any scheme. Of course, the easiest one for us all to figure out is points scored against. Sometimes, we complicate things, but let's never forget the object of the game for any defense is to not allow points.

But, let's dive a bit deeper. The next few are about closing the door on your opponent during each game within the game. Those are simple.

Takeaways and 3rd Down stops.

Since 2011, the Cowboys have had multiple takeaways in 20 games. They are 15-5. The 5 losses in question include Denver 2013, Debacle in Detroit 2013, The Dez fingertip game against the Giants in 2012, the gutting loss in New England in 2011, and the Revis INT game in New York in 2011. So, to put it rather simply, if the Cowboys get 2 takeaways in a game, they either win or have historic regret for gutting losses that stick in your memory.
That's pretty wild, but not all that surprising considering the ways this team has found to lose games of late.

Someone finally gets it, hidden under all these stats we all love to throw around the object is simple keep the offense from scoring!!!! Yards are not points they are empty stats, you have a team moving the ball from the 20 to the 20 but if you are not putting up points all those yards become meaningless

This is a great report from Bob Sturm. I appreciate his hard work and diligence. What stuck out to me was that Dallas really benefited from a terrible performance by Jake Locker. When you couple in the fact that the offensive line and the running game was dominant and physical, the defense was highly protected.

Until Romo shows ME that he is 100%, this is how the Cowboys will win football games.

A hot quarterback will give the Cowboys problems.

As far as I'm concerned, this is really best case scenario stuff. We are lacking talent in a lot of areas on Defense, but the guys who are there are playing at least adequately, with some, such as Rolando actually becoming standouts. Now it's up to our beloved QB to hold up his end of the bargain to make this a playoff team.

Great job as always Bob!

And let's not get too carried away with all this new-found solutions with the running game..

this was the Titans..

This team never plays the same from week to week unless you count all the steps backward that usually follow any success.

let's wait and see before we fill the headlines with how glorious it is..huh?

Next week commeth..

We'll see.

Very great info....when you are only bringing 4 pass rushers 75-80% of the time and still getting pressure, it makes playing pass defense much easier. When you aren't having to bring the safety into the box all the time to stop the run it is more of that.

There were a lot of posters that were adamant that this DL was going to be the worst in the league. Funny, but a whole lot of them have been a lot less vocal in the past week.

If we can stay healthy, and it will be easier when DL are getting 30 snaps a game instead of 50 or 60, then I think the defense can be average at the very least. I hoped top 20 to start the season and I don't think that is out of the question.

This could be applied on so many levels in concerns to the Cowboys....present and past!

What stands out to me is Mo. Look at the chart.
There were only two passes completed to or outside the numbers on his side.
One of those was Walker's TD and the other was behind the line of scrimmage.
There were actually only 8 total attempts to the left side of the hash marks.
That's astoundingly low.

I know he wasn't credited with many splash plays but that's pretty much shut down CB play when they don't even test you.

Thanks so much for sharing this with us, Bob. A lot of us are big fans of your analyses that are no-nonsense, to the point and absent of the overblown hyperbole that so often floods this (and many other) message boards. I appreciate that you've taken the time to personally stop by and share your views. Thanks again and don't be a stranger.

I was really surprised when we cut Sterling Moore in 13. I thought he was one of the best DBs on the roster in that pre-season. I think he's done enough to deserve a modest contract with a reasonable signing bonus. Hopefully he keeps up the great play and earns himself some security and a solid roster spot.

Enjoyed the read, and any improvements around the secondary are accumulating towards a season where players look to be returning. That has to be as pleasant as the aroma around a freshly fired up grill.

Points more important than yards and meaningless padded stats? Hmmmm

Until they start giving you points for so many yards then yeah that is pretty much it. Most stat sights I see tend to determine the quality of a defense based on yards same with offense but simple fact is it is all about points scored and points given up.
