We've typically been a majority cover 3 team, I think we ran a lot of cover 1 last year thinking there'd be a Hardy/Gregory effect on the pass rush with DLaw.

Yeah, that didn't happen. That's a big reason why we didn't get nearly as many turnovers.

Wouldn't be surprised if we changed back to a primarily cover 3 defense this year again, with Jones as the single high.

Henderson was the pass coverage coordinator last year. I'm actually interested to see what Jackson and Baker have cooked up this season.

if you dont blitz or get consistent pressure on the QB you had better have alot of players who can tackle real well

At 8:47 AM, there was in an intrusive Dallas News subscription application sheet that kept covering up the article and wouldn't go away.

Anyhow, happy to report it's gone now -- thanks for asking.
I'm having the same issue. Haven't been able to read it yet .
always look forward to strum's breakdown

BLITZ RATE

One of the many helpful items we track here from week to week continues to focus on the blitz rates of the Dallas Cowboys. Right now, the Cowboys rank among the most conservative defenses in the NFL. This is a direct reflection of the value system of the person who calls their defense. In fact, it is interesting to see how incredibly conservative they have gone after being coached by two of the most aggressive defensive coordinators in the NFL in the past decade. Rob Ryan would unleash blitzes when you would least suspect them to try to zig while you would zag. His overall blitz totals were high, but not uncommonly high -- his total blitz number would remain within the boundaries because he would blitz when you expected nothing and would do nothing when you expected a blitz (in general).

Rod Marinelli has decided that Dallas doesn't have the pass rushers or the corners to do that, and frankly, he doesn't believe that he wants to play defense that way. So the Cowboys brought the heat on just 21.4 percent of those situations

PERSONNEL

One thing that we are always messing up in today's football media is this dated idea that the Cowboys (and everyone else) are either running a 4-3 or a 3-4 defense. In 1987 or 1997 that made sense. But in today's NFL, almost nobody runs a 4-3 or a 3-4. Rather, they run a 4-2 or a 3-3 or a 2-4. The key number is six guys up front, because in today's NFL, in nearly 70 percent of situations, each team has five DBs on the field. And this doesn't even really mean safeties that play linebacker. This means that teams have three corners on the field. In Dallas, that definitely means that Orlando Scandrick is a starter way more than whoever the third LB might be (Kyle Wilber at the SAM). Look at the trend:

The league is now in nickel about 70 percent and the Cowboys have actually gone higher than that when they had Scandrick healthy. Also, in 2014, they were ahead so much that the opposition was passing more and the Cowboys adjusted. It went down last year because the Cowboys were behind a ton and had to deal with teams trying to run out the clock, so you add another linebacker to try to slow that idea down.

As offenses go more and more to 11 personnel (3 WRs-1 TE, no fullbacks), defenses adjust. The Cowboys actually play dime defense about 60 percent as often as they play "base." That means we must change what we call "base" defense. It isn't a 4-3. The base defense -- when you are playing it more than any other, is absolutely a 4-2-5 in Dallas and most places around the NFL. This is helpful to know for any fan because this is why you always need corners in the draft and on your cap. This is why you don't rush to cut a corner who has a contract you don't love. Brandon Carr plays 1,000 snaps for you and you need corners who can do that and not get exposed every week.

I wrote a helpful (hopefully) report on this recently that I would invite you to read by clicking here. Every week, we want to discuss coverages and what they all mean and how they work (At least on a simplistic level so that everyone can follow along), but I probably shouldn't recycle it all here today. Please read it and get familiar with the concepts and therefore you can enjoy the week-to-week materials here as the games start coming fast and furious.

But, in short, here were our findings on what coverages the Cowboys were running. Hint: There was very little Cover 2 and even less Tampa 2. So if anyone tries to tell you that Marinelli has the Cowboys in Tampa 2, you know that they aren't actually watching the Cowboys play.

http://sportsday.***BANNED-URL***/dallas-cowboys/cowboys/2016/08/30/sturm-know-cowboys-coverages

As you can see above, despite Rod Marinelli being called a Cover-2 or Tampa-2 coach, I would attempt to verify that the Cowboys ran Cover 2 just 146 times (25%) out of a total of 576 passes. The Tampa-2 variation (which is a Cover 2 subcategory) was run less than 25 times all year. So, next time someone in the National Media identifies Marinelli as a Tampa-2 guy, feel free to change the channel. They aren't watching the Cowboys play enough to consider their opinions.

I think we all hope for more blitzing.

Buddy Ryan had a good quote about blitzing that I can't remember but, it basically never let the QB have time. Even if you have to send 8.

Sturm points out that our nickel defense is actually our base. Which begs the question: How much did Scandrick's absence hurt our turnover production in 2015?

Stupid. The ONE game we won without Romo, against the Commanders, we blitzed a lot. Scandrick can tackle. Why not blitz him a few times a game?

I think Marinelli has an outdated approach to football in today's league. I think in today's game, you have to attack the QB and if you can't do it with your 4 man front, you better find another way to do it. I just am not sure Marinelli has the ability to make that adjustment. If he isn't getting pressure out of his front four, he's "stuck" in the sense that he just can't bring himself to blitz......... so he'll just play more bend but don't break and hope the offense makes some mistakes.

I think he's overrated. Like Garrett, he's not creative.

Blitzing is fun to watch, but I actually like the fact that we don't do it very often and instead just play simple technique-sound football most of the time.

Our problem is not with the scheme, and it's not with the coach. Our players on defense aren't good enough.

I don't know how to do it, but there is an article from Blogging The Boys - about the difference between our Offense and Defense, and its the best article I have seen yet. 55% more assets allocated to offense - as in high picks. Talks about how we have allocated high picks to front line, and on defense to the backend (Safety and CB) 5-2 is ration of first rounders. States how if football is won in the trenches, we takes our offensive line high, and now RB. But high picks for defense is the small guys. If some one can post the article to the fan Zone would be great. Sobering read.

That's a good one, but fried spam (like it thin and crispy like bacon), 2 over easy eggs and white rice is the unofficial Hawaiian breakfast. And you got to try spam musubi or spam kimchi fried rice, so ono! :D
