I like how the chart of the 53 man roster breakdown always adds up to 53 players. :)

Going light on the defensive line probably is a case of wilber also playing end sunday and the fact that I bet they anticipate the giants and Commanders spreading them out most of the game and being in Nickel/dime/odd sets and wanted the spots in the secondary.

Even as I say that I am not sure I buy it. It is odd to be light like this on the D line.

Maybe after week 1 they bring in a veteran and in a month they will have lawrence also.

I don't know but I am really curious what the defense is going to look like at kickoff sunday. What is justin durant's role?

What is justin durant's role?

He's a classic progress stopper.

If the vested veteran is on the roster week one, his base salary will become guaranteed. Durant will either get paid to sit on the bench or quickly get injured if asked to play.

It is what it is, the coaches love him.

I'd much rather release and bring back Durant, if needed, after week one so his contract would not be guaranteed.

Anthony Hitchens and Damien Wilson need to play, and Andrew Gachkar can be the salty veteran, he's better on special teams, too.

Not sure Durant is just rusty or has nothing left. He looked pretty bad in the preseason, should have played in last game at very least. Same for Mayowa, a series or two couldn't hurt.

Good work, Sturm!

I love this part:
Last year, they had Joseph Randle, Nick Hayden and Wilcox all starting. They have been replaced with substantial upgrades in Ezekiel Elliott, Cedric Thornton and Byron Jones.

Thanks for that Bob.

I am at a loss to explain the team's efforts to address the safety position ever since Woody and Roy.

There simply has never been any interest in getting not just good to great starters but also depth. Byron was not drafted strictly to be a safety although it's lucky for us he's versatile and smart enough to be a good one.

If at any point during the season, Heath, Wilcox or Fraizier have to see significant time on the field we are in deep trouble on the side of the ball where there is already no margin for error.

It's encouraging to see we are drafting better lately.
The lopsided grouping at important positions is puzzling
Are they holding on to players in a trade dispute?
They are not finished.

Thanks Bob

Thanks Bob. Great article. Really enjoy your stuff and wish more journalists would copy your model instead of going for tmz type stories

As an aside, the Saints are carrying 7 backs - one FB (John Kuhn) and 6 RBs (Mark Ingram, C.J. Spiller, Daniel Lasco, Marcus Murphy, Tim Hightower, Travaris Cadet).

7 healthy DL is a bizarre roster set up IMO.

Apparently, I've exceeded the 30 day limit for free viewing of articles from Bob.

Anyone have a way around this?

Yes, but Murphy is the primary returner and Lasco is their gunner. Our group is on teams, but not in those key roles.
