They do a nice job of getting their receivers open in traffic. I noticed we use none of that and our receivers run straight lines..... Why??

The Cowboys need to abuse this gray area in the rule book regarding pick plays like the Cheatriots do,,,, especially given the fact that our receivers, other than Dez, are not very physical. They need scheme help.

That's the Cowboys Way. Make everything as difficult as possible.

Good stuff, the Pats have perfected that pick play. DMC has played to long to be that bad at pass blocking.

We absolutely need scheme help and I agree, we need to try and incorporate some picks in our offense.

With that being said and if we do start running pick plays, I fully expect us to get called for offensive pass interference the majority of the time, unlike the Patriots.

There are a lot of teams who run pick plays...NE, GB, NO and Denver run a ton of them. No need to single out the Pats.

We do run some pick plays but without Romo we have no one to hit them
The key is it them quickly and we can't do that right now

Henderson needs to go to work. This is the longest Claiborne has ever stayed healthy.

On those pick plays - I would rather just destroy the receiver running the pick. If it calls for pass interference at least you get a good hit on the WR. Garrett then can talk to the refs and explain the pick and convince them that the defender is fighting for ground to cover the open option :).

It really wasn't that bad. There is a 2nd view from the Broadcast footage that shows up close how McFadden knocked the defenders feet up in the air be the defender was agile enough to balance himself on 1 hand that was on the ground and then continue his momentum forward. That defender would never have been close to Romo but Weed just has no awareness.

On the 2nd play that he shows, Weed is in the way of McFadden getting over to make the block. Weed is slower than average in his drop back from Center which is a big part of the problem.

"But, let's pick plays that are interesting but not played out by this point of the week and have some fun talking Xs and Os. Feel free to tweet me @SportsSturm when a game shows you a play that you would like broken down and I will attempt to include it in this post."

That's a funny pun at the beginning of your article.

A discussion of how to combat picks plays would be a good topic for an article, IMO.

I think a swith-off in coverage to a 2-man zone at times would help. They did that once in the Saints game but the timing was off. I think if they could really perfect it and not let the offense know when they're going to switch off or not, it would really help. Obviously the problem which happened in past years was that 2 DBs ended up covering 1 receiver and nobody was covering the other one. It was normally Claiborne making the mistake and then Scandrick yelling at him.

The other option is to play tighter press coverage to give less space for receiver setting the pick to operate. The problem is again, that if done incorrectly it could be difficult to make the tackle after the catch.

In the second view, the defender did a good job of faking what gap he was going to hit also.

I'll single them out everyday and twice on Sundays if I get the notion to.

We just played them and they picked us to death.

We would run some with Romo.

I just think they are deep in the playbook and only Romo can dig them out.

What you have seen with Weeden is raw gameplanning and playcalling.

There is little gray area. Play goes it, the players try to execute.

The results so far are a little disturbing.

I would like to know what the point of emphasis is with the pick play.

To me, the concept behind an illegal pick play is that you're:

1) Not actually running a route

2) Blocking downfield

So while Amendola did not touch the defender, it was clear that there was no intention of running a route. And we have all seen instances where a player gets in the way of a would be tackler, but doesn't touch the tackler and that is effectively a block.

I just don't know what the referees' point of emphasis is on these pick plays.

They should fine players for pick plays. The NFL can review the film and determine exactly which picks are legal and which ones are illegal.

just like the NBA, the NFL has sold its soul for scoring. THAT is why they do not call pick plays.
