Sturm's take on T. Smith today....(with video)

I understand your thoughts and don't necessarily disagree. I just would hate to pass on an impact top 10 pick at another position of need when it's been proven every single year of the draft that OL picked in the mid to low rounds and even UFAs have just as much potential to be Pro Bowl players as high first round picks.

Last year is an example. The Skins might regret the pick of Trent Williams in the next couple of years when they see what they passed over to end up with a guy that's just a decent to good, serviceable offensive tackle.

Who would the impact pick available to us in your opinion?

This is my dream scenario; no matter how many times I try to change my opinion on Smith, I still want Carimi and still think he'll be the better pro

I think he will be the best Pro as well. I get all the talk and potential, but in the first round he is not there for me Carimi is. The fact that we can trade down to 14-17, pick up another 2nd or 3rd and still get Carimi...sign me up and do it.

The one factor Carimi has is a serious attitude! He reminds me of a 100% healty Columbo...I will take that any day.

Hilarious. With most of the comments on this page I thought Sturm had some more video on Tyron Smith.

I clicked on the link thinking Sturm was going to suggest not taking him. What's funny is it's the same ole' YouTube clips folks are bent out of shape about AND Sturm is recommending taking him.

Nothing new.

i would rather pick smith than a DE at 9.that's the reason a trade down looks quite appealing.we can have a shot at both smith and costanzo around 14 or 15.

As opposed to all the tackles in the league that *look* awesome whilst making their blocks? Every snap in the trenches is a battle. Just be thankful hes staying in from of his guy b/c it would be a sight for sore eyes

I think all 3 have some flaws but as we know only time will tell

Oh he certainly will struggle with some speed rushers, but your RT usually will.

At the risk of becoming a broken record, however, our run blocking was horrid last year. As bad as our pass blocking was, our run blocking was even worse.

There are things you can do to help a RT with pass blocking, but you can't manufacture good run blocking.

I've read folks say he struggles with speed rushers too, but I have not really seen it. He seems to maul the slow guys and is quick getting out of stance for speed guys. I have not seen it on a consistent basis. I've seen Smith get beat far more by speed guys than Carimi...for what ever reason Smith is really slow to get back...even though he is so quick and athletic.

I'm just sayin....
OL?

That's exactly how I feel. I understand we wanna have a good running game and protect our qb but the defense needs someone to make an immediate impact

I simply do not see how this guy can be the top OT in the draft...it’s very confusing to me to hear all the top scouts and evaluators claim him to be the best of the class. I simply do not see it; I guess that's why I'm not an NFL scout.
You are not alone...

And you know, sometimes the pro scouts do get it wrong. We laymen sometimes aren't as dumb as we look.

But this thread has a lot of one thing that wears me out about the draft. Some people have already dug in a position that the guy is great -- or sucks -- and no how he turns out as a pro, they're going to refuse to change their position.

I don't understand that, but it happens every year.

I think he has the potential to be a good pro (I hope)...but until potential is guaranteed...give me evidence and proof.

You just have to see how it plays out, especially in light of the frenzy that might occur at the QB position. Just because everyone mocks a certain order in the top 10 deosn't mean that is how it's going to go down.

ALL the experts love this guy but....yeah, he gets real lost at the second level at times and also overpowered a few times at the point of attack. NERVOUS now for first time.

As opposed to Columbo who could not get to the second level or get out his stance on the first.

I am so sold on Smith it's stupid. This kid is going to be one of best tackles in the league in a couple of years. I have no doubts he can handle the RT position this season too.

He is going to end up being 320+lbs and powerful as hell. He has the feet and arms to keep anyone from getting around him and his sheer size, strength, leverage and the fact that he plays with his knees bent means he is going to be hard as hell to bullrush when he fill out. He also plays every play with a lot of effort.

Give me Tyron Smith at #9 all day.

Pretty much.

It's quite funny.

That's what keeps bugging me about Tyron. I hear 'he has the arms, strength, feet, and mobility to dominate' but he doesn't dominate.

I want a guy that I know can dominate because he has already.

I would prefer the guy that is ready right now to be a steady consistent, good offensive lineman for years over the guy who has a ton of potential but may not be ready for another year, and even then will need to grow into his potential. I don't know much about any of the 3-4 lineman we are considering but I want a starter this year, not a potential filled project in the first round.

From what I hear, that guy is Castonzo or Carimi further down in picking order. If we dont get Peterson, I say we get O-Line because from what I hear a DT/DE is not going to make the kind of difference a first rounder should. Guys like Fairley, Dareus, Peterson, Miller, maybe Quinn are the ones I hear being talked about as impact players. Watt, Jordan, Smith are being spoken of as very good, consistent guys but not big difference makers. Just what I've heard, cant wait for the damn draft!

I see all the athletic ability, and potential...however its only potential at this point. I see someone very inconsistent and seems to get beat a lot...he makes me way to nervous.

I'm cemented in my opinion to trade down and get Carimi!

Carimi is hard nosed and has shown to be the most consistent OT in the draft...some may argue Castonzo is, i'd be fine with him...but for me give me Carimi all day every day and don't look back!

Carimi will have trouble with edge rushers. This is one reason he will always only be a RT. Carimi will top out as the best he can be in the next season. His upside is already realized. The guy is a bulldog and I like that, but his strength is running only. In today's pass happy NFL, that is going to be his downside.

Smith will easily be a better tackle than Carimi and every NFL scout / coach knows this. That is why nobody considers drafting Carimi before Smith or Costanzo.

You know, one thing Jerry said yesterday that I don't think he was fibbing about was that a top-10 pick isn't a developmental player, that he needs to play now. Now Tom Ciskowski talked about how any rookie is never completely ready and has to grow into the job as he plays, but still, what Jerry said makes me think maybe they do prefer Castonzo.
