I thought the movie Band of Brothers was actually much much better than the book.

Cold Mountain was another movie that was better than the book.

I'm really looking forward to seeing the movie adaptation for Cormac McCarthy's "The Road." Not sure exactly when it's coming out, but it should be fantastic.

One thing about Band of Brothers that being a miniseries it was pretty much able to go into details and flesh out the charactors that you cannot do in a two or three hour movie- or for that matter even a series of movies.
I would not say that it was better then the book, but it certainly caught the atmosphere and the thrust of the book.

W.P. Kinsella's "Shoeless Joe" became the film, "Field of Dreams."

I liked Kinsella's writing style, but I like the movie better.

The other three that would top my list would be:

Lonesome Dove
To Kill a Mockingbird
Jaws

For those that loved the Band of Brothers series.

Last night on HBO they showed a thing where Hanks and Spielberg are making a similar mini-series called Pacific. I guess similar WWII movie but in the pacific.

Don't know if it can compare to Band of Brothers but hopefully it will be good.

Just said it will come out in 2010.

Read The Hobbit first. You will not regret reading all 4 books.

QFT.

I have lost count of how many times I've read these books, they are great.

Old Yeller!

I also love "To Kill a Mockingbird". My Mom and Dad gave me a first addition of this book a couple of years ago for my Birthday.

As far as contemporary stuff, I guess I'd have to go with this.

I cannot wait for the Hobbit.

Same, although I'm not sure about Guillermo del Toro. I hope he doesn't go over the top like he did on Hellboy 2.

I though both "Gods and Generals" and "The Killer Angels" were both done well as films and were very true to the books.

I also liked Kenneth Branaugh's Henry V.

Of course I was a history major in school, so I sort of gravitate to that kind of stuff. :)

The Green Mile made a great translation from book to movie.

There was so much missing that I can't say the same. I will say the books and the movies were good.

The Bourne series
This doesn't make sense to me. The Book != the movie at all. There are about four facts that match between the movies and the books. His name was Jason Bourne, he was on a boat early in the first movie, he met a girl, and her name was Marie.

The rest of the movie doesn't match the book at all. Where is Carlos in the movie? Carlos was the main villain and the primary storyline of the book!
