Sudden death OT....

I think it was on the NFL Network post game show where they said there have been 10 playoff games that went into OT. Out of those 10, this was only the 2nd one where BOTH offenses didnt touch the ball.

its perfect Karma. bert faver throws the game away with seconds left and then their defense couldnt stop the saints offense.

And I believe it was on the CBS pre-game show where Shannon Sharpe interviewed the 2 WRs and TE for the vikes and asked something about running up the score on the Cowboys... I heard Shainco(sp?) say something like THIS IS THE PLAYOFFS, THERE IS NO MERCY SHOWN. And I think it was harvin that said something like IF THEY DIDNT WANT US TO SCORE THEN THEY SHOULD HAVE STOPPED US.

So I say this...THIS IS THE NFL, THE SAINTS OFFENSE, AND EVEN SOME OF THE RULES, WILL NOT SHOW MERCY...and IF THE VIKES WANTED THEIR OFFENSE TO HAVE A SHOT TO SCORE THEIR DEFENSE SHOULD HAVE STOPPED THE SAINTS FROM SCORING.

I love the OT rules the NFL has, keep it the way it is.

I feel like two teams that have played 4-15 minute quarters and should've/could've/would've won or whatever the reason for the overtime shouldn't come down to a coin toss as to who gets the ball and it's sudden death. I like the idea of a much shorter quarter, maybe 8 minutes or so. I also don't like the college 25 yard line either, probably starting on your 20 yard line and having 80 yards to drive would be better. I just think the entire game was played with each team going back and forth for a set period of time should be the way the OT is played also but adjusted to shorten the final period if possible.

How about this one...

"If you didn't want just a 40% chance of winning the game in overtime, too bad! You should've won the coin toss!"
what's so funny?
There is no advantage to calling a coin toss, dude. None whatsoever.

they have the 1st choice of choosing heads or tails. the home team has to wait and see and hope the away team picks the wrong side.

How about making it score-or-lose for the team that gets the ball first in overtime?

If they score, they win. If they don't, the defense is credited with an "overtime safety" (or some other term worth X number of points), and the team on defense wins.

I'm not saying that should be what happens, I'm just throwing it out there for discussion. So a team that is confident in its offense would choose to receive, but a team that is confident in its defense might choose to kick. And you'd never see a punt in overtime, either, because every team would go for it on fourth down.

Adam posted the stats on overtime a while back and it was like 51% to 49%. It's not some huge advantage.

Hmm, I don't remember posting that, and I can't find any record of it in the archives.

Calling it doesn't give you a higher probability of winning the toss. It's 50/50 regardless.

The college rule is horrible as well.

The best idea I've heard is the team to score 4 points or more wins the game. Compromise of the current and new rule. Sounds fair to me.

The only professional sport that sudden death belongs in is hockey. As much as I enjoyed watching Minny lose tonight, having your season end simply because you lost a coin toss borders on asinine to me. By design, football is a game where the offense has an inherent advantage.

Number of Offensive Super Bowl MVPs: 36
Number of Defensive Super Bowl MVPs: 8

At the very least, if you're going to have sudden death OT in the NFL, make the rule so that a team must put the ball in the end zone to win and not with a field goal.

I would rather see both teams get the ball 100% of the time. I like that stat better. It's not a huge change IMO. All you do is have both teams get the ball once then have it be sudden death after the first possessions by both teams. It would also make a similar strategy on kickoff so that you can kick it off first and see how much you have to get on your first possession.

Yes they should. Pretty damn stupid that a defense that gave up 500 yards doesn't have to take the field in overtime.

only they would have if Minnesota's defense would have prevented the other team from going downfield.

I like a modified version of OT where each team gets at least 1 possession, however the game is played like it just started.

I mean, you win the toss and want to receive, the other team kicks off to you and you play it just like a regular season game. If the offense goes down and scores either a FG or a TD, they then kickoff just like usual to the other team for their 1 possession.

That way you incorporate offense, defese, and special teams all into the game and you allow both teams a chance to have the ball.

Simple solution.

Ooops sorry....I could've sworn you posted it

If you don't want to chance the coin flip, win it before overtime kicks in.

The glorified scrimmaging that the farm leag...college teams use is pretty pathetic.

I get all the rguments for having both teams getting the ball for sudden death overtime. However, to me, last night effectively both teams had the ball for sudden death. The Vikes had a chance to win the game at the end of regulation with no tme left on the clock and blew it. They weren't penalized last night.

Not sure the current format really needs to change. It's about as fair as you can make it.

A few things I'd consider:

Have the kicking team kick from the 40 or maybe even the 45. I think having a high probability of the receiving starting at their own 20 evens things out some.

Another idea for the post-season only would be to have the teams play an entire extra 15 min period.
Maybe a shorter OT period could work better.....10 or even 5 mins.

team wins the toss decides to recieve or kick--if team scores on first possession they kick off and the other team gets a possession--each team must have one possession--more fair than college or pro

...is a TERRIBLE rule. The NFL needs to take something from College Football and implement a similar overtime process.

I was not rooting for either team in the NFC Championship game, but seeing Minnesota lose in OT without a series on offense seemed unbalanced to me.

I guess the upside in this case is that the Super Bowl would be a good game no matter who played the Colts.

I have no problem with it. The game is about offense and defense, if you have to kick off in OT then the job is to stop the other team get the ball and score. Stats have shown the winner of the coin toss does not win a large precentage of the time on the opening drive.
