That stat is misleading the winner of the coin toss is 60% but not 60% with the opening drive. They count as part of that 60% the team going on to win but it could be the 2nd or 3rd drive before they win. On opening series it is 51% to 49%
Too large a sample size to be misleading. 60% is 60%. Wether they won on the first drive or not, it still demonstrates a clear advantage for the team winning the coin toss.
I believe the fact that this number has shifted after 1994 demonstartes a few things.
1) The 5 addition yards makes a difference
2) The game has shifted to favor offense. They really is no denying this fact.
Given this clear evidence that winning the coin toss does make a difference, perhaps a slight modification to the OT rules would make sense.
I said slight!
I want no part of a silly college football type modification. Or even a both teams get a possesion type change. If you do that, it changes the game too much. It's no longer pro football as we know it, it becomes something else.
I think moving up the KO spot 10 yards for OT would do the trick. It would all but insure the recieving team started at it's own 20 yard line. That should significantly reduce the advantage of receiving the KO.
Since we already have slightly different OT rules for the post-season (no ties), maybe we could remove the sudden death feature.
Just have the teams continue to play 5 min OTs til one ends with a team leading. Each team gets one TO per OT. KO from the 40 and play 5 mins.
