Give electronic cigarettes a try.

I've been a 1-2 pack a day Marlboro smoker for 15 years. I didn't know what to expect from these things, but thought I could at least cut back on some of the useless smoking I do when I'm sitting at the computer like now. Got my e-cig though the mail last Tuesday and haven't wanted to smoke a real cig since.

All an e-cig is is a device that you put nicotine liquid in with whatever flavor you want and it vaporizes that liquid. You inhale the nicotine and vapor (same stuff that is used to create fake fog on stages). It still gives you the nicotine fix but without the other far worse chemicals that gunk up your lungs and can eventually cause cancer. You can also order the liquid with varying nicotine levels so it's possible to slowly ween yourself off of that if you want. Here's a pretty in depth guide to how they work and the different types of them:

Sorry for the PSA, but I had to share my experience. I hadn't heard of these things before a month ago and would have assumed they were a joke without reading other peoples' experiences.

They actually sell non-nicotine fruit flavors too, you know for the kids. ;)

Most people who try to quit using gum or lozenges don't use them correctly.

It sounds ridiculous but the gum is not meant to be chewed.

This sounds crazy and I have no idea how it works. My dad was a lifelong smoker who tried everything to quit. One day my sister signed him up for some sort of treatment where they shot lasers into his ear. He has not had a single smoke or craving since...

I smoked since I was 15 and had been trying to quit over the last year. My mom bought me a Green Smoke brand electric cig this past christmas. I liked it but it just wasn't the same as the real thing and couldn't quite quit smoking. It finally ended with me quitting smoking but taking up both the electric cig and.... dipping. I hate the fact that I dip and know its still real bad for me but hey, baby steps right? At least I can breath now.

Quitting smoking is easy if you have intestinal fortitude. It's all in the mind. Just tell yourself your smarter than this and your not going to get beat by it and stop. Just plain stop. If you say that's easier said than done, you don't have what it takes mentally.

I agree totally. But it's the mind that overcomes that addiction. Mind over matter. If you don't mind, it don't matter. Just tell yourself you're not going to smoke again no matter what and stop. It's that easy.

That still doesn't help me not automatically punch people for daring to speak to me when I've been a whole day without a smoke :laugh2:

Mind over matter. The mind is very, very powerful. Let it work for you not against.

you have to want to quit, sounds simple enough but if you truly want to quit you will, if you don't, you can find a million reasons why you can't.

I smoked for 15-17 years. (can't remember the exact year I started, but I was young) The last 10 I was attempting to quit and failed horribly until my final attempt to quit on Oct. 5th 2000.

This is what it took for me to quit.

The patch (NicoDerm CQ clear patch), spearmint gum (I hate all mint with an extreme prejudice), take no breaks at work, eat lunch at my desk and immediately go back to work, no drinking, no going out with friends or family that smoked, a lot of gritting teeth and finally, I kept a pack of smokes in my truck. As long as I knew they were there, I was slightly more at ease.

The Spearmint gum helped in two ways. The chewing of the gum helped with the tension. The taste of spearmint (which I hate) helped distract me. Between chewing and hating the taste, it really helped take my mind off of the complete freak-out that was occurring without the nicotine.

Funny thing was, the pack of smokes I kept in my truck? The box was empty. My current GF at the time was quitting too, but she failed. She was stealing the smokes out of my truck to get her fix. I never noticed, because I wasn't cheating. Anyhow, that box was empty for several months before I noticed it was empty. Once I didn't notice, it was because I was trashing them. After about 2-3 months, I was to a point that it didn't matter anymore.

The down side? I gained 25lbs over the next 90 days after I quit. I was okay though as I was only 155lbs when I quit. I was 180lbs and 6' tall which is close to the correct weight. Prior to it, I didn't have to watch what I ate, today, I MUST.

I went from about 215 to 250, I'm 6'2". I'm about 235 now and am pretty much stuck there.

Thats how it is for me, if I go 4-5 even hours without a smoke during the day I'm pretty edgy.
