Stating what we already know - Garrett already should have been extended or fired. Things here are being done like the last ten years of Al Davis' life.
This has been an offseason filled with smart football decisions. Five years ago, chances are DeMarcus Ware and Jason Hatcher would have been signed to extensions, likely DeMarco Murray, too, and Johnny Manziel would currently be starring in the Oxnard Circus.
Instead, the Cowboys have continued their recent trend of becoming younger and quicker, much in the same mold of how Jimmy Johnson built his team a quarter century ago. Zack Martin is hitting everything within a 30-foot radius and looking old-school tough in the process. And 27-year-old Henry Melton is playing like a man possessed. Winning teams start and finish on the lines and the Cowboys have a dramatically improved defensive front and quite possibly the premier offensive line in the NFL.
This is very good news. Guarded optimism is more than appropriate for those hoping for success in 2014.
There’s just one problem. Actually, it’s a ginormous, humungous, really, really big problem. It’s not the elephant in the room. More like a herd of elephants in one of those plastic kiddie pools. Not going to end well.
Jerry Jones has to sign Jason Garrett to an extension. Before the season opener against San Francisco. Or sooner. Like today. Like right now. Like before this column is finished.

When did it become impossible to coach on a one year deal? I think Garrett will be here for awhile, but there is no urgency in extending him until he proves he can get over the hump. He's been allowed to revamp the roster and has top asst coaches surrounding him, so now is the time to make the leap.
He won't extend him because if we escape 8-8 world and fall into 3-13 world.
HE WANTS TO BE ABLE TO CAN GARRETT! SIMPLE!
We are smart enough to know NOT to trust what he says.
That goes for any owner or GM, heck I have seen GM say a coaches job was safe and then fire them a week later. It has nothing to do with Jones lack of trust it is what they all do when being asked by the media. Media creates the term hot seat not the GM or owners. I never heard an owner saying his HC is on the hot seat. Jones did say this was a do or die season for the Cowboys, what that may exactly mean is anyone guess. For me I take that as Garrett has to win or he will be gone and if that is the case then why would he be extended at this point
In the offseason, yes. During training camp... probably only 10 or so.

Christ, only 8 players remain from the very team that Jason Garrett first inherited. Now, give that change a chance to solidify.
Sorry - I am as hopeful as the next guy that JG becomes what many think he can become this year, however, extending a coach who has never had a full winning season isn't my idea of a sane decision.

1. Bull on your post.
2. Don't compare Jerry to "any owner" he is in an class all by himself.
And the Saints only have five players left from their Super Bowl winning team. So what?
Teams experience approximately 25% roster turnover each year. People are mistaking the state of the NFL now as Garrett somehow taking out the trash and taking names.
