How about letting Garett earn it?

Folks in the real world usually have to earn their promotions.

Just saying

Pretty much. When does performance and producing results come into equation, or are we under a 10 year plan?

No, that's a Russian concept...but the 'new' generation believes in if at first you don't succeed, cut your throat and let it bleed...

You need the sad thing about boycotting Jerry Jones is that your essentially boycotting the Cowboys. And Jerry Jones doesn't equate to the Cowboys.

CowboysZone ULTIMATE Fan
One of these days, fans will learn that Jerry talks out of both sides of his mouth. To be clear, I like Jerry "the Owner" but have not been a fan of Jerry "the GM" for a long time. That said, Jerry continues to say one thing and then contradict it later, either with other statements or with his actions. He does this because 1) it keeps the Cowboys in the news and 2) it makes him right no matter how the outcome turns out. The reason I mention this is that it appears some fans still do not recognize this. They will say they do, but then post comments that state just the opposite. Jerry wants to be right and the best way to be right between two options is to choose one and "almost" choose the second.

A good example of this is this thread.

Just a day or two ago we heard how Jerry loves Garrett and cannot imagine him not being our head coach next season. Yet, his actions state otherwise. If he truly believed Garrett was "the Guy", Garrett would have a new contract extension already. The fact that Garrett does not have an extension should tell you all you need to know. We all know Jerry loves Garrett for a variety of debatable reasons and publicly, Jerry is going to support Garrett because 1) it's the smart business/marketing thing to do and 2) if the Cowboys have a break out year he wants to be "right" about not only hiring Garrett but also sticking with him when a lot of fans and the media have wanted Garrett gone for 1-2 years now.

With the history of questionable Jerry "the GM" decisions behind him, Jerry needs a big win. The best way to get a big win is to be proven right on something where a majority of people (fans, media, etc.) disagree with him. If Garrett does well this season, Jerry gets to hold his head high and say "I told you so". If Garrett does poorly this season, he will hire someone else and the noise produced by the "We told you so" crowd about Garrett will be muffled and forgotten soon after the new hire.

In all the banter in this thread I failed to see one person mention this.....So I will take the bait.

Let's say Jerry does extend Garrett for say 3 more years........

Cowboys for the sake of this argument go 5-11 in 2014.

Then what does Jerry do?

Fire Garrett? If he does that.... then he looks like a fool for extending him in the first place.

If he doesn't fire him...then the pressure continues to build.

It's a no win situation for Jerry.

Sheesh! Some of you fans would've run Landry off before he built his dynasty. You would've been wrong about him just as you are Garrett. Jason will get his extension. Not speculating.

Maybe Dave Campo, Chan Gailey and Barry Switzer should have continued to build their dynasties as well.. Why was Rob Ryan gotten rid of, when he was in the process of building his defensive dynasty?

I agree, Garrett is Landry Lombardi and Jimmy rolled into one. Jerry needs to give him a 10 year extension, the only reason he's been 8-8 3 years straight is because of injuries, he hasn't made any mistakes or lost winnable games nor does he have any control over the roster or training to prevent or prepare for those it's all just bad luck. Those injuries have already shown up this year again, if he wins a single game he needs to be named coach of the year.

So the team mouthpiece floated the idea to see the response of the fan base?

I expect an extension, but that is unfortunate. It isn't what is best for the success of the team long term. However, until other issues are fixed, it probably doesn't matter much unless you happen to get a HoF caliber coach that forces Jerry to step back. I think those days ended with Parcells. Jerry is happy. He isn't walking on eggshells. Garrett lets him take center stage and shove his mug in any available microphone.

Winning? Eh, aren't you entertained?

I don't agree. Any competent coach would have gotten this team into the play-offs. We were always playing for qualification in our last game the last three years, and Garrett blew a game on his own at minimum, by some stupid decision probably each of those three years.

The Landry comment, I can't say I agree with. Coach Landry started from scratch. The Cowboys were an expansion team when being an expansion team meant you started from scratch and not how it is today. Coach Landry was a tried and true NFL Assistant Coach who had been with Championship Teams as a player and a Coach. He was a WWII Vet who had been tested under much more difficult circumstances then what the NFL would ever throw at him. He was a man who deserved the teams belief in him and even he, with all of these attributes was almost fired.

It took Coach Landry 6 seasons and after that 6th season, he went on to lose in the Conference Championship Game. They would go on to make the playoffs 18 of the next 20 years and record 20 straight winning seasons. Does anybody see this from Garrett? It's not to say that Garrett can not have success, he could, but he's not Coach Landry and he will never be Coach Landry. There is only one Coach Landry and his time has come and gone. I wish Garrett good fortune because I'm a Cowboy Fan but these kinds of comparisons don't help him. They only hurt him because it acts as a direct comparison to Coach Landry and he can never win in that comparison. It only delineates the differences in the two and that's not helpful IMO.
