The smart play is always to throw the ball out of bounds as long as they're outside the tackle box and the ball gets back to the line of scrimmage so no grounding.

But speedsters are rarely brainiacs like QBs so that almost never happens.

Since it was a handoff there's no foul for illegal forward pass either.

But running full speed with the ball tucked and switching to passing posture for a guy not used to passing increases the chances the ball could slip and then you compound things by fumbling, which is worse. Take the loss and live to fight another day. I'm sure coaches would teach it otherwise but if you play the odds, you take the loss.

Can't recall any NFL QB that took on would-be tacklers like Josh Allen does since Joe Kapp with the Vikings in the late 60's.

That Cam Newton fellow was pretty much unstoppable for a spell too. That didn’t turn out so well later on.

Well in that case then that's a foul that is either declined or enforced without loss of down only 5 yards.

Throwing the ball away means loss of down but no loss of yards like a grounding or illegal forward pass.

It doesn't take a bunch of brain cells. Just make sure you're outside the tackle box, throw it out of bounds and past the original LOS. No flag.

I've seen McCaffrey do it a few times in his career to avoid losses, especially in the redzone. But McCaffrey went to Stanford so I guess it's par for the course for him. P.S. - McCaffrey threw a long TD pass today.

Sure, because there's no chance they could actually fumble the ball in the process, especially with defenders around them.
