Let's be honest, we all know Parcells wronged Henson. I'm not suggesting Henson was going to be the next great QB. And lord knows, he was ridiculously hyped despite only having one good year at Michigan. But at the same time, let's not kid ourselves, we all knew Parcells wanted nothing to do with Henson. Parcells didn't like what Henson stood for. He was a kid with a silver spoon in his mouth that was given too much praise for essentially doing nothing. And Parcells was bothered by the fact Jerry Jones thrust this naive QB upon him. To suggest that Henson's ability was the sole reason for not getting a chance in Dallas is silly. Look, I don't think Hutchinson or Carter were wronged but I do think Henson wasn't treated fairly. And let's not pretend Parcells doesn't play favorite. We have all seen him give opportunities to players who were undeserving but were "Parcells boys" like Ryan Young. Heck we all know Maurice Carthon had no business being an offensive coordinator let alone an assistant head coach.
I was never a fan of Drew Henson. But I do know that Vinny Testaverde was a geriatric walker that had no business starting for this team. We all cringed together in that Seattle game hoping he didn't throw an interception on every attempt because his passes were so weak. Seriously, it was like watching a Madden X-Box game between two friends in which the passes are hitting defenders in the chest yet they don't come down with the pick. That's how bad Vinny was. We all know that regardless of how undeserving Henson was, he deserved to start over Vinny. But Parcells decided to pull a Bobby Knight and show how tough he was by starting HIS man over Jerry's boy. That's what it came down to. The rest is history. But 10-18 for 78 yards 1TD/1INT in no way warrants being yanked from a game. Parcells just pulled him out as soon as he threw the INT. That's can't help the confidence of any QB. The rest is history.
Sorry but I believe momentum and luck play a huge part. Tony Romo could have easily been Drew Henson. Had he got released, it's not likely he would hav succeeded with another team. He would have been on the backup circuit and eventually released. Meanwhile, had Parcells given Henson a chance, who knows.
I know it's not popular to support Drew Henson on this forum. I know the PC thing to do is to bash him like the rest but I would be lying if I felt he got a fair shake on this team. I genuinely believe Parcells made up his mind about him. I would have preferred Henson finish out the season instead of Testaverde. At least that way we would have seen what he was capable of. I don't miss Henson. But I do think it is a tragedy that someone got screwed because an old man didn't like him.
