And they were hilarious, weren't they?

I heard knocked up was good.

40 year old virgin... dumb. i laughed once, when the guy had morning wood at the begining.

You are the wrong age -- 16 candles, Breakfast Club, and Pretty in Pink came out when I was in Middleschool and High School. Those really connected on several levels for me.

that's exactly where i was coming from with why i compared this to the john hughes trifecta. just being a few years removed from hs. this movie definitely hit the spot for me. the relationship between seth and evan is definitely something i'd classify under warming. i felt that this movie had a lot of heart, and refused to let its character off easy. each character(seth, evan, and mclovin) were put through their own personal coming of age rites of passage. and i laughed not just because of the writing, or the performances, but because i could relate. because either i or friends of mine have been there. it was the last ride of two buddies who are afraid of having to go at it alone in the big scary world after hs. and everything was perfectly balanced, the humor and heart each in perfect measure preventing it from becoming cheesy.

Let's not forget the excellent Freaks and Geeks and Undeclared TV series

i've got the undeclared box set, and have seen the majority of the freaks and geeks, just haven't gotten around to picking it up yet.

That being said - the string of great comedy movies that have been coming out is very refreshing. Maybe that's what you meant by Hughes.

not so much. i mentioned hughes because like i've stated in an earlier post, i felt like these guys have captured a generational high school/teenage experience much like hughes did with breakfast club, sixteen candles, and pretty in pink. of course just my opinion.

Well I thought 40 year old virgin was decent, some real funny parts, but nothing outstanding. I thought Knocked Up was pretty good, a definite improvement over Virgin, but still, neither are anything I'd watch very much. I was really looking forward to Superbad, and while it has some good stuff, mainly the cop/McLovin parts, it was pretty disappointing. It was way too long I think at nearly 2 hours. Most of the laughs weren't that great, and because of the length they were often times too spread out.

Hot Rod was MUCH funnier.

One of the funniest movies I've seen in a long time. Much better than other High School comedies.

That's what I always hear. Breakfast Club, for the life of me, I just don't get it. But I wasn't a teenager in the middle west during the eighties.

I was a midwestern teenager in the 80s, and I totally got it. There were always the "type" distinctions where I grew up. My friends and I were very fond of that movie.

The strangest thing is knowing that nerdy little Anthony Michael Hall is now all grown up in Dead Zone. He will always be that little guy in my mind. :D
