Top 5?????? LaDanian Tomlinson, Tiki Barber, Shaun Alexander, Larry Johnson, Edgerrin James, and Cadillac Williams are all better than Clinton Portis.

:lmao2:

In 4 years Clinton Portis has racked up 5930 Yards...
Ladanian Tomlinson in 4 years= 5899
Tiki Barber in 4 years= 1941.
Shaun Alexander in 4 years= 4241
Larry Johnson in 3 years= 2416... Clinton Portis in 3 years= 4414
Edgerrin James in 4 years= 4913
Cadillac Williams First year= 1178.... Clinton Portis' First Year= 1508
Walter Payton didnt even get that many yards in 4 years... 5316
Neither did Barry Sanders.... 5676

Just for kicks lets throw in Emmitt... in 4 years he had 5702 yards... yeah Clinton Portis isnt a Top 5 back.

That wasnt exactly the smartest post in the world.

Those stats aside, I won't argue that LT, Shaun, and Edge aren't better than Portis. LT and Edge get those all important receiving yards, and Shaun is a TD machine.

LJ is a closer call, this past season he showed what he can do, can't really compare 1st 3 years of stats, because Portis started since he was a rookie. LJ was behind another good back in Priest Holmes.

Cadillac on the other hand, that case just can't be made. Not saying that he won't end up being better in the end, but one year (and an inconsistent one at that) isn't much to go on.

Much as I hate to say it Portis is arguably the number 4 or 5 back in the league. I say arguably, because I could make the case for some guys, like Ahman Green, Deuce McAlister, Ricky Williams (he was better, if he gets back to Ricky form who knows). But Portis is probably top 5, definitely safely in the top 10.

BTW, is that some kind of what they call in Washington "Fuzzy Math"

It is not a debate of who had a better start to their careers, but who is currently better.

Comparing CPs first four year stats to the other RBs first four year of stats has no impact on the discussion as to who is better now.

CP has only spent 4 years in the NFL... those were the only stats i had to work with.

I understand that, but you should be comparing CP to what the other RBs are currently doing and not the way their careers started out.

Two different debates:

A. When looking at the first four years of stats, which RB has had the best start.

B. Which running back is the best in the NFL now.

Weird, I added up Tiki's numbers last 4 years and got...5981 ?

And Shaun A...6186...

LT...6125

Not to worry Jarv, Commander dude is a little confused as to what he is debating.

Nate Burleson of the Vikings had 1789 yards the first three years of his career to Santana Moss's 1578 the first three years of his career. Must mean Nate Burleson is a better WR than Moss.

Well brighteyes, maybe because the draft doesn't put anyone over the hump for a SB...it prepares for future SB's....do you actually think the guys we draft at #18 and in later rounds will be impact starters who will lead us to the SB? The draft will have very little impact on how good we'll be this year. Even if we draft an OL with our first pick, he'll struggle to start or have an impact.

Sorry you don't like my opinion, but to think the rookies we draft this year will have an impact on our SB aspirations is just plain stupid, dude...:)

Nope. It ALWAYS makes a huge impact if nowhere else then in depth. San Francisco's draft in 1994-- Bryant Young, William Floyd, Lee Woodall-- all key starters to a Superbowl season.

Even Jerry Jones' WORST draft, the 1995 one, had a key contributer in Alundis Bryce that while he was JAG helped keep us under the salary cap and survive until Deion arrived.

oh and i was talking about his First 4 years. so thats why i compared everyone first 4 years... not their last 4.

I got that, but how is that relevant to the debate?

because the guy who i had originally qouted said that CP was not a top 5 back... and all of the RBs i listed he had said that they were better. so i listed all of the RBs stats to show why CP is a top 5 back

By that logic:

Are you debating who is the better RB or which RB has had a better start to their careers. Two totally different things. IF you still do not understand answer the Burleson Moss statement above.

Portis is top 10, I wouldn't go top 5 at this point. Al Saunders as OC may make me change my mind, but Portis was so much better in Denver than he has been in DC.

So do stats not matter??? If not then what does. Because last time i checked all of you guys say that Emmitt is the best because he has the most yardage overall. And Santana would have way more yards if he would have been with the skins since the beginning... but he was a WR for the NY Jets.

Some here say this, not all. Be careful about generalizing or lumping people into one group without knowing them.

Stats are not the only factor, but they do matter. Where someone is in their career is relative, wouldn't you think? Or are you of the opinion that Curtis Martin is the top back in the NFL right now?

For the last time, pay attention.

If you are trying to figure out who is the best QB, WR, RB or anything else in the game TODAY, you do not go back to their first few seasons to figure that out.

A good example is Tiki Barber. If I were to judge him properly for what he is NOW, should I judge his first four years or his last four years.

Still do not get it. Emmitt was probably the best RB of all time, but the year or two before he retired he was not CURRENTLY better than LaDanian Tomlinson even though his all time stats were way better.

For real, is that so hard to understand?

an asterisk must be added to any back that was with Denver. that is why Portis can only have his last 2 years considered.
