Other than old football cards, I haven't found many color shots of the Cowboys' original uniforms (1960-1963). But here is a great action shot:

From this, you can tell that our current throwbacks look very little like the originals. In fact, they are so different, I hesitate to even call them "throwbacks". The most obvious difference is the color: the originals were royal blue, whereas the throwbacks are navy blue. And of course, the throwbacks use a nameplate, whereas the originals didn't.

By the way, there are at least two clues in this picture that tell you it can be no earlier than the 1961 season -- can anyone guess what those are?

The Vikings, the pictured opponent, began in 1961.

Very good!

Actually, 1961 was Perkins' second year with the Cowboys, but he was on IR for all of 1960 after hurting his ankle at the 1960 College All-Star Game.

I need to come up with some tougher questions!

That would be from 1963.

#43 is obviously Don Perkins
#64 is starting LG Jim Ray Smith
#83 is TE Lee Folkins
#81 is SE Billy Howton

That is the only year within the range that all of those numbers were used.

Nice pic by the way.

Actually it is the 1961 season. Can't be 1960 because Don Perkins started in 1961. #83 is Jimmy Doran and he was our first ever Pro Bowl player in 1960. He only played for us in 1960 and 1961.

In addition to this we did not play the Vikings in 1962 and 1963 and in 1964 the original double star jerseys went into mothballs.

This photograph was taken on September 24, 1961 at the Cotton Bowl. At that time the home teams wore their dark jerseys.

Very nice find Fred. Thank you.

We didn't play the Vikings in 1963.

Therefore 83 is Jimmy Doran and 64 is Bob Grattkau. Agree on 81.

You're right. When I looked at the roster for 1961 I didn't see a #64 but I was looking at the starters and Grattkau was a backup.

Nicely done Hos.

Hey we all talk about this superbowl in reference to Jackie Smith and Benny Barnes interference but what about that BONE HEADED fumble by Randy White..He looked like he was trying to pitch the ball back to a teammate. That got Pitt the 35-17 lead..

#43 1961 NFL rookie of the year and lives (or lived not sure if he is still here or not) right down the road from my wifes job. His Lobo's pic is in the convention center.

Yep, and very down to earth. I liked hearing him speak.
