I am ignorant about this thing, I have read about it in a few articles but I don't understand how supplemental picks are handed out. I understand why the players are there but what determines the teams that can pick them? Do we have a chance to draft anyone in the supplemental draft and when is the draft? And come to think of it why can't those players just sign as UDFA's?
any help appreciated greatly

Its based off this years draft all teams can "offer" a pick for a player and the team offering the highest pick gets the player. The pick offered will then be taken from 2007's picks. Lets say us and Texans both offer a second for a player then the texans get him because they came before us in this years draft. So the picks are from 2007 but the order is from 2006 and you don't have to participate.

I believe it's awarded on a lottery basis with the worst team (the Texans) getting 32 balls, the Saints 31 balls, the Jets 30, etc.

Then they pick and whoever is selected has the option of picking or passing.

Isn't that how it works?

The Supplemental Draft is held in July. The draft order of the 32 teams is as they finished in 2005. Teams submit a bid for a player, the highest bid gets the player.

For example, last year Manuel Wright, DT, from USC was in the Sup Draft. Miami big a 4th round Draft pick on him and got him. If a team with a higher 4th round pick had bid that 4th rounder they would have got him. Or a team could bid a higher round pickfor him, in other words a 3rd, 2nd or 1st.

Basically it's highest bid wins. The absolute highest possible bid is the Texans 1st round pick.

i like brooks but i can't see us going after him. where would he play? all of the starting spots are taken and we actually have good depth at the position. i wouldn't give anything more than a 5th rounder but i know he will go higher.

Only players that declared eligible for the Draft can be UDFA's. Brooks was dismissed after the date to declare so he isn't a UDFA. If the Sup Draft passes and no one bidson him then he becomes a UDFA.

I would like to see us bid a 3rd rd pick for Brooks......

I wouldnt...I wouldnt use any pick on him to be honest

Bradie James really came on last yr and looks to be developing into a very good ILB...we just signed Akin Ayodele to a decent contract to play the other ILB spot

Brooks was painfully out of shape and soft last yr...he was poor on the field and is a total turd off the field, resulting in him getting canned off the team

I doubt we'll have any interest at all

I'm sure Jeff Ireland has done his homework and has talked with Al Groh about him already. Brooks doesn't have to break the starting lineup this year and I'd rather have him as a backup over Parham anyday.

So would I and I like Parham. It's about ceiling of potential. Brooks' is a lot higher. If we take a chance on him, I'll be fine with it. If we don't, I'll be fine with it.

Isn't that what I said? Other than when it's held? Granted you said it more clearly prob. oh well

The supplemental draft does NOT use the same order as the regular draft. A weighted lottery is used to determine the draft order. The 32 teams are divided into three groups -- six wins or less, more than six wins and no playoffs, and the playoff teams. For the lottery, each team gets "tokens" based on their original first-round position in the regular draft (ie., Houston gets 32, Pittsburgh gets 1, etc.). The tokens are then drawn to determine the order within the three groups. And since using a pick in the supplemental draft costs a team the corresponding pick in the 2007 draft, any traded picks for 2007 are taken into consideration.

I honestly can't remember the last supplemental pick to make an impact in the NFL. I may be forgetting someone but you probably have to go the whole way back to Walsh to find an even average player and the fiasco with Kosar to find a great player.

Don't think the Texans would love to have had the second rounder back they wasted on Hollings?

Yep...between getting a 1st and a 2nd for Walsh and a 1st for Pelluer Jimmy did pretty good trading scrub QB's.

I thought that was how it went. Thanks.

Actually, we got a 1st, 2nd and 3rd for Walsh from the Saints.

Of course, taking Walsh meant we didn't get Cortez Kennedy, whom the Cowboys likely would have drafted had they picked in the No. 1 spot for the 1990 draft.

Then, again, they may have traded down and picked Blair Thomas, who Jimmy Johnson had rated ahead of Emmitt Smith.

It all worked out, though.

Didn't we draft Russell Maryland #1 overall in 1990 anyway after trading some of those picks we got for Walsh? Or was that 1991? Jimmy did so much wheeling and dealing I get mixed up sometimes.

Mike Wahle and Jamal Williams were picked in the 1998 supplemental draft. They both played in this year's Pro Bowl.
