Too many people betting on the Cowboys. I doubt the odds change in the direction you are hoping for.

Agreed. Right now my money would be on the Jags. Last I saw they were 25-1. The NFC right now has too much competition. As far as I see it, the Jags have the Patriots and Steelers. Anything can happen of course, and we'll probably see some upstart come into the picture, I'm just playing the odds as I see them now. When gambling, I'd rather put my money on the least path of resistance.

don't throw good money after bad. you'll do far better in the stock market if you have a few working brain cells.

Dumb question - I've read that the NFL and NBA has historically supported the prohibition of sports gambling. What's the rationale for this - wouldn't the legalization of gambling be financially beneficial for these organizations? i.e. increased viewership, sponsorship, etc

give em time, they'll screw it up on this side of the equation too

they'll probably tax it to death which will be more successful than prohibition.

I remember all the angst growing up about parimutuel betting on horses being illegal, it finally got legalized to the dismay of the baptists and now, from what I understand, the horse tracks are struggling to stay in biz

Not in the east coast as they want to promote gambling as a source of revenue for the state. If people know that there will be a major tax burden then why even gamble?

Because the state doesn’t get to keep any profits like they do in the state run lotteries.
Love how they always try to sell lotteries to voters with stuff like “the profits will go to the schools” yet all the schools still poormouth constantly and the teachers strike.

I was right with you all the way up to "...yet all the schools still poormouth...."

You really think so? Honest question. I mean, schools have no control over where lottery money goes. Heck, they cut programs and all kinds of other stuff every year just so they can cover the cost of their core curriculums. I really don't understand the sentiment. Teachers are the people to whom we entrust our children every day, the people responsible for molding the future of our country. As with anything, there are good and bad teachers. Most are underpaid and a few maybe way over for what they offer, but by and large teachers are dedicated professionals who choose to teach because they love educating kids, and often end up paying for stuff out of their own pockets because schools can't. The national average yearly salary for primary school teachers is around $54k and in some states more than $12k less than that. In some states teachers average around $77,000, Alaska, NY, California, so you have to consider cost of living in all cases, but teaching is a thankless job that nobody goes into to get rich. And folks choose to be teachers so you can't completely blame the system, but in a world swimming in lawyers who make millions chasing ambulances and athletes who become some of the most affluent people in the country by playing games, If I'm complaining about anyone wanting more money it's not going to be teachers.

it was all based on maintaining the integrity of the game. if you can't gamble on a sport, then outside influences (organized crime) have no reason to try and "fix" things. black sox scandal comes to mind. easy to pay off refs in basketball (it's been done). worst part of it all, imo, is a lot of family's will suffer because a loved one just doesn't have the strength to resist and will piss away their savings.

Monday's landmark ruling from the U.S. Supreme Court allows all states to establish sports wagering programs. Most surely will. It's a far cry from the 1970s and 1980s, when states were...

That's my fear when it comes to the gov. You and I understand this concept but I don't trust bureaucrats
to be shrewd with taxation. They'll justify illogical, counterproductive over-taxation as a "sin" tax and some will probably proclaim some garbage about "protecting the children"

Long overdue. Sports gambling was already happening under the table anyway; how many of you participated in a buy-in fantasy football league or NCAA tourney bracket? Lawbreakers.

Make no mistake: states want this just to get their cut of the money so they can regulate it. Hey, if it goes to school trusts or benefits the community, more power to them. Here in Utah, I loathe how many tax dollars we don't see from everyone that crosses the border to Idaho and Wyoming to blow $50 on Powerball tickets that are essentially like burning your money away.

Let the people do what they want with their money.

That is 150 billion dollars that will now be in the system and taxed

The problem with legalized betting is that you need to pay in advance .... no bets on the come like with bookies

There will still be a small Black Market to handle the desperate but this will help cities like Atlantic City big time

I know I will spend the day at a Sportsbook on big college football days and March Madness

Ok, I am taking bets now. Will Texas become the 49th or 50th state to legalize it.......unless Puerto Rico is added before then.

This is the only backwards state where the AG threatened to arrest the players not DraftKings or FanDuel. FanDuel blinked and pulled out but DK has stayed. And the tool didn't carry out his threat.

I don't think the DFS falls under this ruling as it's online based and the argument has been made that chance is removed and skill replaced to eliminate it from the gambling arena. Must have consideration, prize and chance for it to be considered a lottery or gambling. And those that play DFS will tell you it is a game of skill, the only chance part is the injuries.

What they should have done is lift the stupid law against online gaming and get in on the tax money. 150B is a conservative estimate on annual online gambling legal in states where allowed like horse racing. The states could get their cut like CO does from Twin Spires, Churchill Downs web site.

This country needs to come to the conclusion that it cannot legislate morality or protect people from themselves. But they can work to remove the crime element from the gaming. Some illegal operations were made unhappy by this ruling, just like the drug cartels with states legalizing and licensing weed.

Only a portion of that 150B, low estimate, will be affected because all the states will not follow the moves of NJ and Mass, soon to follow.

And it doesn't matter how they show the positive effect on the tax coffers just like they're showing the positive effects of legalized pot on the prescription disgrace in the states where they've legalized it.

The dumbest state in this country is Texas, they left the tupid off the end of the name. They're letting billions just drive across the state line in every direction because of their "morality". Wonder if these leaders against it would be as opposed if their churches were taxed or gambling was allowed and controlled?
