I've gone Apple, I went back.....happily went back. I don't want to turn this into an anti-Apple thread but that was an asinine statement.

It's not just going 'back'. It's going 'backwards'.

I can't imagine buying Microsoft hardware on purpose, though this looks like a decent device.

It was a joke smarty pants. It came from "once you go black you never go back". But thanks for your input!

Agree. It all really comes down to need though.

This is cool.......if it does more for the xbox SmartGlass feature.

I'd be interested in the Surface Windows 8 Pro if the price is reasonable.

This looks like the best competition yet for the iPad. If they manage to successfully meld the Windows experience everyone is used to with a tablet interface, it could be successful -- particularly in enterprise.

Ha. I came across this. Funny stuff. btw, someone should shoot Ballmer.

Everyone who knows anything about Apple knows that what they do is take an idea someone else came up with it and make it about 100x better than the original.

For me it's the keyboard which is shocking coming from Microsoft. I know a lot of artists so my perspective might be a little skewed but isn't the reason people left PC's because of the "windows experience"? IMO windows will never be as intuitive as Apple's OS.

Artists are one thing. They make up a small sliver of the computing market. Enterprise is huge and expanding. People want to be able to work from a tablet -- and Microsoft could be much better at that than Apple. However, enterprise is adopting the iPad on a massive scale. Miscrosoft could jump in and take it over -- but it may be too late.

My bet is that it is too late. The only way I can see Microsoft taking over is if Apple is too arrogant to take the keyboard design from Microsoft and apply it to the iPad. But, it will take years to catch up. As you mentioned enterprise is and has been adopting iPads on a massive scale.

I will say this though, the timing was extremely clever. Wait until Apple releases their new iPad and then come out with the Surface. It'll be interesting to see if sales drop this year. They've essentially guaranteed themself a year to compete with what I'd consider an advantage.

I love my laptop, but this is the first tablet that intrigues me.

I'll still probably stick with my laptop, but for travel reasons, it'd be nice to leave it at home to get away from work completely.

CNET'S Microsoft Surface RT Review

Eric Franklin's initial impressions

I only got to hold the Surface briefly, but it felt substantial -- it was fairly light without feeling airy. Also, the screen didn't feel as responsive as I expected. I swiped the screen briefly to rotate around a panoramic picture Microsoft had on the device, but the feedback of the animation felt rough and didn't seem to respond as quickly to my swipes as I would have liked.

Microsoft's really pushing how much time its team spent designing the tablet, as well as its unique keyboard feature. (Let's face it: no one likes typing on a tablet screen for long periods of time.) However, I didn't actually get to use the Touch Cover keyboard while it was attached to the tablet. And, because the Touch Cover keyboard itself gives almost no tactile feedback, it's difficult to say how successful Microsoft has been with the design until we actually use it with the tablet. It's definitely the thinnest non-virtual keyboard I've ever used though. (Alas, I didn't even get to play with the Type Cover keyboard).

The kickstand feature feels very well-integrated into the design and is actually useful, so thumbs up there.

That's why I got the Ipad originally . I am in airports A LOT and I hated dragging the laptop along. The Ipad was a great change for me for convenience purposes. Plus now I can use the WiFi now on the plane.

I'm a bit of a workaholic, contrary to all my activity on the Zone. lol. So surfing the web would bore me after awhile.

If this can truly offer an environment where I can work on a dialed down basis, then I'd consider it.

There's a trend towards "Bring your own device," but I don't think it will last. The more enterprise trends towards using mobile devices, the more security will become an issue. I've been out of enterprise for about a year, but at this point last year, the story wasn't good, and our IT group wanted more lockdown.

If the Surface Tablet has a good security story, then I think it may be able to make up some ground, but that's really the only foothold I can see.

Virtually every time I sit in a board room or meeting room with a group of business people or lawyers, at least a handful have an iPad out. And these are old (i.e., 60+ year old directors/CEOs) and young (22 year old i-bankers). It has shocked me how much Apple has dominated the enterprise market (over 70+% of new enterprise activations, last I saw). And if they don't have an iPad, they at least have an iPhone -- Blackberries are all but officially dead.

I typically leave my iPad at home, but in meetings it's great to keep in front of you for access to e-mail and files.
