Really? It rolls over? So whats to stop a team from fielding a $50 million team one year, to field a $150 million team next year?

Or is the rollver special?

There's nothing really to prevent it. The Vikings, for example, have rolled roughly $15 million forward in each of the past two seasons.

Look for Bledsoe and Witten to get extended.

Witten I can see, but why do you think Bledsoe? He is under contract for two more years very reasonably. Granted, he has played OK, but I'd see no reason to extend him unless he plays lights out this year and next.

Extending QBs to big money deals at the age they begin to break down is what gives teams salary cap issues. Look no further than Troy Aikman for proof of that.

He has made his big money, I think he is looking for other things than a big payday.

After thinking about this for a few minutes, I have to ask -- Why do the Eagles always sign guys around this "deadline" -- reported as today? They seem to do it every year.

What benefit is there to this?

There's no benefit, really. All it does is allow them to raise the player's base salary for this season and count it all against this year's cap. (After today, any increase in base salary for this season is counted as a bonus and is prorated.) But they haven't even raised their players' base salary when they've done it, so the deadline has been irrelevant anyway. And given the NLTBE loophole, there's no real reason to try to load up on this year's cap to use up cap room.

So the Eagles use this as an artificial deadline -- really having more to do with the halfway point of the year -- they likely get a more favorable deal as the players aren't on the market -- nobody is driving up the price of the contract. The player gets cash a few months earlier -- and what amounts to insurance against an injury in the 2nd half of the year that would kill their market value.

Plus the Eagles get a little morale bump from seeing contributors getting new deals mid-year.

Hate to say it but -- smart team.
