What's the latest on their health? One of them really needs to be ready by training camp and I would have to one will be with the Cowboys not addressing the position in FA or the draft.

Not sure but they both need to show up big in TC. I could see Dallas going light on TEs this year with switzer and Gathers pushing for spots on the 53 and brown likely getting a spot on the PS. Time to start letting go of stagnant players.

Dallas needs a capable 3rd TE in this system, I think Switzer takes one of the 5 WR spots. They are both JAGs but are capable blockers and Dallas needs that.

They're definitely keeping at least one of these guys. The hope is Gathers earns the 3rd TE spot with a strong TC/preseason.

I'm guessing we will carry 3 TE's at least on the 53. Possibly 4

The staff has been pleased so far with Rico Gathers' performance in practice. Jerry even went so far as to predict him getting some live action during the regular season, so he might well have gotten some positive feedback from the staff regarding his progress. Here's hoping some of this feedback comes to the surface when the lights come on this year. He'll more than likely be used sparingly, if at all but at least, it'd be a promising sign of things to come..

I didn't mean Dallas would only bring Witten and Gathers, just that I don't think Dallas wants to bring Witten Gathers Swiam Hanna. If I'm not mistaken Dallas usually has 4 TEs, right? I think they go down to 3, and No FB.

Agree, I absolutely expect Rico on the 53 and I would hope he can contribute since the position was not addressed. But Dallas needs a "sure thing" as a 2nd blocking TE and as another posted noted above, the Cowboys will carry at least 3 TE's. Witten, Rico and who (not necessarily addressed to you, just in general)?

Swaim is a Witten-in-progress; he's no twinkle-toes, but blocking has been good and he's a hard worker.

Hanna also is a baller, with more speed, better hands, but less successful as a blocker just due to size. He's really more like a bigger slower WR.

If they're both healthy (and they've had plenty of recovery time), I think it will come down to system fit, and the 'Boys have never quite figured out how to use a smaller TE (Escobar).

Remember, Rico is 6'8", 280#, a monster who can move and jump, and has the tools to block. He's gotta be the future, and the coaches are beaming about his progress.

So, I'd guess that we'll stick with system fit, and keep Swaim over Hanna.

Perhaps that "who" you referred to will turn out to be either Swaim or Hanna. (Doesn't seem too likely we'd actively carry 4 TEs, though.) If it turned out to be Rico who fills the bill as that blocker, it'd surely be a pleasant surprise. It's probably a lot to ask at this point in time, though.

Agree, and I for one am comfortable with either Swaim or Hanna filling that role. Back to my original question (again, not directed at you)....is either reasonably expected to be healthy?

That would be the pregnant question that remains to be seen, no doubt. Here's hoping at least one of them is able to help in that regard.

Can the term JAG be filtered...so over used and over hyped, just like the person that started it, Parcells...LOL...

Strange we haven't heard any updates on Swaim and Hanna. Some reporter needs to ask.
With Swaim and his recent broken foot. here is my current thoughts.

Swaim, with the broken foot will start TC on PUP, gives him extra time to heal.
Hanna, may also, but if he is not ready by now, he's done. So that opens up the roster for Gathers to make the team for sure.

Witten, Gathers, Swaim will be the 3 TE's once Swaim returns. I don't see them keeping 4 TE's.

One thing is certain. There's no way we can carry 4 TEs, a FB, and 6 WRs. We'll go lighter than that at one or more of those positions. We will probably go heavy at DL and in the secondary as well, so something has to give. I have to think the FO feels pretty good about Gathers and at least one of the other two TEs since we didn't draft one.

Dak seemed to like to throw to Swaim. Said they built up chemistry in TC last year.

Gathers has 5 preseason games to show what he can do. Man I really hope he's progressed enough to atleast be a number 2

The thought of him running downfield with a ball in his hands is scary lol. I would HATE to be a DB seeing that monster running at me

What is he 6'8 280? All I know is he's being doing everything he's been asked to do and than some. When you got a guy who wants to practice as an offense lineman to improve his blocking that's impressive..good news is when he was running scout team. Tony Romo loved throwing to him and our defense couldn't cover him at all

Would Gathers have to go through waivers to stay on the PS? I'm not sure how that works. If he does have to go through waivers and IF the FO wanted to go that route I question whether he would make it through.

I thought the usual was 3 TE and FB. I cant see them cutting Keith Smith at FB. He's a good STs player and turned himself into a very good lead blocker.
