Until he shows it consistently its all opinion. I am tired of every year hearing about this new guy or that new guy that is going to set the league on fire and it never happening.

How "consistant" does the guy have to be? He stepped in and took the starting 3-technique position after missing almost all of his rookie year training camp and then proceeded to have a teriffic season, finishing second on the team in sacks. And, with him inside, the Cowboys finished 1st in the league in run defense.

And comparatively, he had a better rookie season in this defense than Hall of Famer Warren Sapp did in his rookie year.

Those are facts, not "opinion".

I think the "opinion" part comes in when a player essentially 'can't win' because he's only been in the league one season.

spencer I guess; and look how that turned out. To be blunt I really do not see what all the song and dance about Collins is. Some here are slobbering all over him but I just cannot see it.

You should look harder. Starting with the facts that I showed you.

It's been reported that he is having a great camp. He's quicker and showing growth regarding pass rush moves.

These kinds of players are always doing good this time of year. Then the games start and they disappear.

There's a reason why the defense has sucked for years and it's not because of having quality players.

... A rookie DT who missed an entire training camp last year, had 5 sacks and got much better toward the end of the year? Also was good playing both DT positions in his ROOKIE year? He was the one guy giving Zach Martin fits too before his injury.

Barring injury, I think that there are going to be quite a few fans jumping on the Maliek Collins bandwagon. I think that he's one of this team's best-bets for a newcomer to make the Pro Bowl this season.

Better late than never for some fans I guess?

Tyrone Crawford back in 2014 as the 3-tech.
For a DT anyways.

Agreed. Once every few years is not that often so I completely get and partake in the Collins hype. Also throw in the fact he was injured in preseason and didnt even have the benefit of a full offseason. He came in and balled out on the fly. He did that without other significant pass rushers taking doubles also. All combined he put together a rookie season that inspires hope.

Amen, it takes alot to impress some people. Appearently if u dont get double digit sacks from go then you are a scrub. Collins hype is well warranted.

Hope is a good word. That's Zack Martin he's going against, by the way.

Then I guess that Aaron Donald - who many would consider the NFC's best defensive tackle - is a "scrub" too, because he only had 3 more sacks on the season than Collins did. It's all about perspective.

I've never been his biggest fan and I absolutely hate his contract, but this is true, especially considering all of the suspensions.

He's not an ideal defensive end, and I think he lacks good change of direction ability, which is why I feel his pressures don't turn into sacks more often, but he's a solid contributor who was having a very good start to camp.

No matter how you slice it, he and the Cowboys dodged a bullet that his injury wasn't more severe, and hopefully, he's ready for week one against the Giants.

One of the negatives about this injury is that I think it was good for La'el Collins to have Crawford to work against so that he could improve. Our young ends do not offer the same kind of challenge. Maybe Irving coming back to practice can take up that slack.

I have wondered how, back in the day, a fan forum might have treated John Dutton, or Too Tall Jones, or Jethro Pugh following the Ice Bowl. I wonder whether folks would have wanted Dave Edwards replaced. I wonder if Charlie Waters would have been tarred and feathered before being shifted from CB to safety. I wonder how many folks recall Randy White's rookie year? I wonder how many people recall the grief Harvey Martin took for his perceived shortcomings versus the run. I wonder how many people remember Martin and Too Tall coming off the bench while Larry Cole and Pat Toomay started as run defenders. Thunder and Lightning.

And while I'm wondering, I occasionally think what heat Tom Landry might have caught in the wake of two post-Ice Bowl divisional round losses to the Cleveland Browns. Recall the book? Next Year's Champions.

I agree. Crawford was challenging Collins and winning his fair share, forcing La'el to get better. That said, I still expect Collins to get plenty of work on his technique both in camp and playing a lot in the preseason.
