I like Mckinnley but this will be a red shirt year for him with his injury, not sure we can afford for our 1st rd to basically be a non factor his first season.

McKinley is one of my guys at 28. I don't think he's put it all together yet. But the tools are there, and no one questions his effort. That's a pretty good bet that late into the first round.

The injury sucks though.

Given the premium all teams put on pass rush I doubt he would have made it to us at 28. Still might not. Glad he is being brought in for a visit

I wonder where Lawson would of fallen last year if it was known he had to get the surgery on his shoulder. IIRC, there was still a chance he didn't need it?

With this class of DE's, I could definitely see him being around #28. Not sure if he'll fall that much more though.

the ideal situation I think we want us to draft a guy at 60 for d end. If not 60 I think we trade down and grab the d end in round 3. If Demarcus walker or Carl Lawson are at 60 you can put that one in the bank imo

Is there a problem with him outside his injury? I don't know much about him but did see a positive piece about him on the NFL Network.
He is extremely raw and hardly polished. Is a bit of a project. Combine that needed learning curve with the injury, it is not good for a team that can't afford to be patient.

Unfortunately when you let pretty much most of your secondary walk in FA, sign one terrible retread in their place and still don't have a pass rush after years of tinkering with it, you kind of find yourself in a situation where you have to think about drafting for need.

McKInley's getting the Dontari Poe/Joey Bosa treatment on this board where now everyone unites behind the idea he'd be a terrible pick. Except he's a really, really good player who will probably shine in the NFL like the other two.

Not if you have any clue how to draft you don't.

"Listen, our roster is such that we must screw up the draft."

"Can't afford to be patient" = must produce right now = draft for need.

You don't draft a player in the 1st round with no discernible skills for the position. There is 0 evidence of him using his hands like an actual pass rusher or any real pass rush moves. Nor is he capable of bending like a speed rusher should be able to. Basically he has the size, straight line speed of a rusher, and a motor but nothing else

That's your evaluation of him and has nothing to do with what I said. "Can't be patient" is a terrible way to determine picks. It's draft for need. Show me the player in this draft that doesn't need to develop. They're college kids.

My only hesitation with McKinley is whether he can be as good as a 4-3 end than he could be a 3-4 OLB where I think he'd be a terror. The last thing I want is for the Steelers or Packers to get this kid.

FWIW, I can live with McKinley at 28.

It has nothing to do with need.

It is about using resources wisely and prioritizing the value of contribution.

A player sitting on the bench for half a year recovering from injury and then starting to work on technique is the definition of luxury.

Would be talking about the same thing if the player were at any position, not just one where there is very little talent.

Oh I don't necessarily disagree.

I have an issue with how the front office has approached free agency. They've put themselves in a situation where they have to come out of this draft with some defensive backs and a defensive end for sure. I think that can color their draft board.
