Well, I wished that the Yankees were having more success at this point but they are hovering around .500 with injuries etc.

However, Tanaka is flirting with one of the best seasons in MLB History. Still a long way to go but if he continues, could be looking at one of the best pitching seasons in the history MLB. I would not say the best, based on projections but in the top 10 I'd say.

Not too bad so far.

If only we had 4 more Tanakas. LOL...

Agreed, he's been fantastic.

Yeah, injuries have hurt the starting staff.

But the big problem is the offense or the lack there of.

And the rock-headed stubbornness of Girardi to bat Jeter at the top of the order just boggles my mind. But it's not only Jeter... several guys have come up small.

It's a painful team to watch right now on days that someone other than Tanaka is starting... It's an old, boring team. :(

You've had significant time missed by both power bats in the order in Beltran and Texiera. Yankees may need to go out and get another bat in the order.

The trouble is... and they could have signed Morales... is that most of the big-bat guys are 1st baseman-DH types and the Yankees have a slew of guys that need to be DHed.

What they need is more production out of 2B, SS and catcher. All 3 spots are pretty much "black holes" at this point... And they probably aren't fixable this season.

For this to be a 90-win team they needed the starting pitching to hang tough, which didn't and they won't be a 90 win team. I question if they'll win the same number of games as last year.

I'm sorry, but what? Tanaka is having an excellent year, but it's not remotely close to one of the top ten years in history.

Yeah reminds me of Guidry in 1978. Record 25-3. Louisiana lightning!

Cueto is having a better year. He has a lower ERA and is going for the lowest WHIP in baseball history.

Yeah, his projected numbers, if he continues this pace will be. Certainly in the modern era of Baseball.

That link is AL-only. Tanaka is third in the majors behind Tim Hudson and Cueto. Cueto has pitched 9 more innings than Tanaka has.

You are right. I stand corrected. Never the less, if those numbers hold, they will be among the best pitching performances in the modern era.

Like I said, not remotely close. The first thing to remember is that run-scoring is way way down overall in the majors the last few years. Tanaka's ERA+ (which relates his ERA to league average) is 200, which is of course excellent, but not anywhere near historic. Pedro, Clemens and Maddux had many vastly superior seasons back in the '90s; they just did it at a time when run-scoring was at historically high levels, so their raw numbers didn't always look quite as good.

Also notice that while he's leading the AL in ERA and WHIP, he's not leading either by very much (and he's not leading the majors), and he's only 5th in the AL in IP. When you're not dominating your own league, that's a pretty good clue that you're not having one of the great all-time seasons.

Don't agree. If he posts a 2.02 ERA, wins 20 plus, has loss count of 4 or 5 and has a WHIP of around .94, that's going to be one of the best pitching performances in History.

Pitcher wins and losses? Okay, no point in continuing this discussion.

Yea wins losses don't mean much. I remember a few years ago Felix Hernandez had an amazing season and I don't think he even had double digit wins.

He went 13-12 and (deservedly) won the Cy Young.

My favorite is Nolan Ryan's 1987 season, when he led the majors in ERA and went 8-16.

Wins and losses are not the be all end all when evaluating a pitcher but ERA, Wins and losses are still the three major considerations for most IMO.

I look at two things... K/W ratio and hits given up per inning.
