I look at two things... K/W ratio and hits given up per inning.

I look more at WHIP and ERA. I'm not too concerned with wins/losses. Lots of mediocre pitchers have had 20+ win seasons for playing on good teams. Lots of great pitchers have had 10- win seasons for playing on bad teams. WHIP tells you how many people you let on base. ERA tells you how many people you let score. I'm not too concerned with strike outs. Different pitchers get guys out in different ways. There are pop up pitchers, ground out pitchers, strike out pitchers.

I have no problems with WHIP and ERA, except that ERA can be influenced by park affects and team defense to a certain extend. Don't get me wrong you have two guys that pitch the same amount of innings, have similar K/W ratios but one guy has an ERA a 1/2 run higher than the other... Well I'm thinking the other guy is was a better pitcher for that season.

No, strikeouts themselves don't tell me a lot, but the ratio between strikeouts and walks is going to tell a lot... and opposed to ERA, the K/W ratio isn't going to be influenced by the park and the team's defense.

That's interesting. I never really looked too much at the K/W ratio. I was just talking about strike outs themselves. I don't think they're essential to being a great pitcher. But K/W ratio might say a lot about a pitcher. I'll start paying attention to that stat more.
