Tank vs Culture

Building a culture of character and winners is what I want. If they're giving their all and lose, I can stomach it. Even if we had lost yesterday, I'd have been proud of the effort the team showed. I don't want a team that quits when the going gets tough.
Shots fired at Rockport. I see you, Rusty.

Nobody's gonna broadcast that it's a tank. But sometimes the effort on behalf of the staff and the players is just not there, and that's normal.
I honestly think the players got excited to face Dan Quinn, we'll find out if that's the case this week.

I believe there's a good chance we finish the remainder of the season 3 and 3 and end up with a 14 to 18 position pick, which i hate.

I'm counting on the new head coach to bring a new culture to this team finally.
What happens the next six weeks?
I really don't care.

The goal should always be to win a championship. Once it’s obvious that won’t happen in a given season it should change to how to do that in an upcoming season. In this current situation we should be playing nothing but young guys.

Who cares about the Giants? Cowboys badly need the higher draft picks.
And while we're at it my brother we need somebody who can discipline these players to be able to close out a game.
I am seriously disgusted with this coaching we can't get a first down and close the game out.
Player doesn't know to go down and let the time run out.
That freaking guyton can't get lined up and negates that huge pass to CD lamb I mean the mistakes just compound.
If we just had a coach that could get rid of all these stupid mistakes and self-inflicted wounds.
I understand we have a lot of players injured but a lot of this stuff is just basic common sense that is not being stressed by the coaching staff really tired of watching this team be so poorly coached

Amen, brother!!! This coaching staff has to go! I would consider keeping DBs coach, Al Harris, and a few others like the TEs and LBs coach. The rest need to go.

And it was good to see some semblance of progress in the young guys
That's the big thing for me. Is the trade off really worth it if you think about it ?

Would you rather sneak in a few wins a result of the young guys (who will be starters next year) playing great or would rather them play terrible but the result is you get to draft 5 or 6 spots higher?

I'd rather have a handful of young guys show upside resulting in a few wins than have them they play not at an NFL level, and you get a slightly higher draft order.

Good questions. Here’s my take.

1. The coaches and players should always be trying to win. That’s what makes sense and that’s fine. As a fan, I think it’s perfectly fine for us to root for losses though.

2. I agree that a winning culture can and does grow over time even from season to season. However, the cowboys are certain to have a lot of upheaval this off season with certain players leaving and also a brand new coaching staff coming in. So, I think that would be a major factor in the culture changing next season that outweighs or has the ability to outweigh the cultural benefit of winning games in the back end of this season.

3. The ultimate driver of the Cowboys culture is the owner/GM. And he isn’t going anywhere until he is in a coffin. So, unfortunately it’s my belief that the culture of the team is going to have Jerry and his son as an anchor around its proverbial neck regardless.

Since I think that, I value talent more than the cultural aspect. My honest viewpoint is that with the Jones’ in charge. The only way we win a Super Bowl is to kick into some generational talent at some key spots that can drag them to victory.

This team has one issue above all else. A sad culture of entitlement.

Or you can be the Browns who always seem to have multiple picks at the top of the draft and yet…..
Well, there's no perfect science to it. I did say you had to have smart drafts and get some quality free agents. Making bad decisions (Watson/Dak) can set your team back significantly in this process.

I hate quitters. Who here would even think about taking an athletic field without the desire to win? Or to put such a repugnant idea into the heads of their children?

Courtney Brown was picked #1 in the 2000 draft. Tom Brady was picked at #199. Draft order doesn't mean squat. Proven year in, and year out. It's wild speculation. Unsuccessful organizations have had high picks for two decades straight, and still never managed to field a superior team. The Lions are an excellent example of this. They didn't magically transform through the draft. They got better because Dan Campbell showed up and, through his own determination & leadership, shook up the loser mentality of a perennially-failing team.

Not to mention that the Cowboys have a front office that could screw up a two-car funeral. You're going to trust them to judge talent? Any quality player we obtain through the draft is a matter of sheer luck.

Build a no-quit, competitive, winning culture...and let the draft picks fall where they may.

A lot of hope here for losing out to secure the highest possible draft pick. I can certainly see the reasoning for that and the potential value in it. Wouldn't bother me in the least if that is the way it plays out. It provides no guarantees, but it does bring at least some hope. The downside is, it also fosters a 'give up' attitude in the locker room. The goals can be come personally motivated. Stay healthy. Put good tape on the record. What's left to play for after that? Why play for the guy next to you in that situation?

Compare that to playing to win and scratching out a few more wins that could have easily gone the other way. For that to happen there has to be a strong desire to win coming out of the locker room, from everyone, every week. You can't draft, trade for, or buy that intangible. It germinates and grows organically. Teams either have it, or they don't. IMO it is one of the most significant factors in achieving great success. It doesn't come easy. It doesn't happen overnight. You can't turn it on and off. It can be built on season to season, once the seed sprouts.

You hold the magic wand. What do you choose? Full blown, bag wearing tankathon, or sacrificing draft position with a few unexpected and hard fought victories that galvanize the locker room and lights the fire of desire to keep taking the next step as a team towards reaching the top.

No guarantees either way. Advantages and disadvantages to both.
The locker room will be galvanized next season w/ some high draft picks added.
