I hear this word thrown around here as far as the Cowboys season. Actually tanking isnt something that occurs frequently in the NFL. Its more of an NBA thing. The Dolphins season is closest thing you will get to tanking in the NFL

A question I have to fan that say we are tanking. What exactly is "tanking" to you?

Tanking to me is when teams know they're out of the playoff hunt and just don't care anymore. Many players have testified to this attitude among their teammates. They say that many players are just playing because they have the talent and they just want to collect a paycheck. So when they see they're out of the playoff picture, they hit cruise control.

I doubt players say, "Let's tank to get a better draft choice." I don't think the players see it that way. I DO think coaches, GMs and owners see it that way and, depending upon their decision-making powers/responsibilities, may choose to play backups and second-string/young quarterbacks as a "guise" to "tank" so they can get a better draft choice, particularly if that draft choice is a franchise quarterback. I think this is what the Dolphins are doing. Although, there's no way to prove this, I'm convinced the Dolphins went for the two-point conversion to make it look like they were trying to win but called a play that had minimal chances of succeeding.

They want Tua Tagovailoa in the worst way. They know the only way they're going to get better (and put butts in the seats) is with a franchise quarterback. It's been too long since Dan Marino.

I wish we would be in a position to get him, but the Dolphins have the No. 1 pick locked up.

I think trading talent away, hiring bad coaching, making weird moves like starting the wrong players. I don't know how coaches really factor into it, because it seems hard for them to teach incorrectly and make the worst decisions when playing/adjustments/scheming. Players definitely can be told to tank, they do it on their own in non-contract years, and collectively if it becomes a group mentality aka our players who have no heart.

Truly tanking would be intentionally losing all remaining games in order to get the best possible draft pick.

It could also be just completely disregarding what is best for this year's record in favor of operating based on what is going to be the best to prepare the team for next season.

Neither option is a good one for a team that doesn't want to breed a loser mentality for the franchise.

True tanking is done by the organization not the players. Its an effort by the organization to lose games in order to get the best assets for a rebuild. When players check out, thats not tanking. Thats players being weak minded

It can work sometimes in the NBA. In the NBA, young players are incredibly inefficient. The idea is if you play your young players a steady diet of minutes, you will both lose games and your younger players will learn how to play more efficiently. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt. There isnt nearly as steep of a learning curve with NFL. Its much easier to win with a young team in the NFL than it is in the NBA. In the NFL you have to go into full in fire sale mode in order to truely tank. That doesn't happen often

They aren't tanking. They are rebuilding. If your team isn't making playoff runs, it makes a lot of sense to unload assets for draft picks. The Dolphins have acquired 4 1st round and 5 second round picks in the next 2 drafts. If they were tanking, the NFL would force a sale and fine the bejesus out of them.

Fans cant tank buddy. Teams tank.

But as a fan, you can hope for losses to pile up. Some fans have the ability to see how losing will benefit the team in the long run or the short term.

Personally, this team is going nowhere until a complete philosophical change with the FO is realized. One where the HC is the most important part of the team. Where coaching and scheme matters.

Thats the closest an NFL team can come to true tanking. True tanking just doesnt work in this league. The word gets thrown around too much. I don't think those people understand what tanking actually is

Ya, but you see fans talking about how the Cowboys are tanking the season. Its a laughable premise

It doesn't work in the NFL and its not happening in Miami. They decided to cash in the some chips for draft picks. I think several teams overpaid them. They got great value.

Not to some. Ive seen some spam the board about tanking the season

I cant speak for everyone. I am sure that some would wish we would tank. If I knew that 4 more losses would get Garrett fired, I would sit back and root for whatever team is playing us.

If they were truely tanking, they would be playing lesser players. They benched Fitz for Rosen because they felt Rosen gave them a better chance to win

Exactly, folks who say they are tanking are way off. Every guy on that team is busting their butt for a job next year. Nobody's job is safe and players know it.
