Team doctors probably found it on his admission X-rays. It's not a fracture, but a defect in the development of the vertebral facets that interlock vertebrae. It creates a risk of instability, significant enough to deny military service.

I don't see how he can play with that kind of risk unless he has corrective surgery.
Maybe that's the plan.

Thank you for your insight!! Question: Does this get worse over time without medical intervention? I assume he has played with this condition up to this point, is his risk of serious injury more today than when he played in College? Does the defect make his bones in the back weaker? Or is it a pain management issue?

But you don't throw the baby out with the bathwater during a four game suspension of DLaw. When he gets back the DE position is fine assuming there are no new injuries.

So you are really looking at the RDE position and they made the call to go with Mayowa long ago. It was another Will McClay decision and he has been very good at finding the hidden gems in the last few years.

The real issue is backing up RDE. I really, really hate using Wilbur as a DE but if you are forced into it for a couple of series in each half its not the end of the world in Marinelli's scheme.

The real issue is how fast Tapper can be on the field, how well he plays and if Jack Crawford can take full time snaps while DLaw is suspended.

The problem with this is - they were not forced to go with Wilber. There have been, continue to be other options, they have chosen to go this route.
I know its beating a dead horse at this point, but the F.O. has made a conscious decision to - go thin at DE, to not look for alternatives with Tapper being injured and having Known about it for at least a month - before cut downs and players being available.
It has been a comedy of errors that just continues to be compounded every time we hear new news on injuries, suspensions, secret weapons etc.

That's exactly right.

I don't think anyone is hunky-dory with the situation for the first 4 games BUT just getting rid of Hayden having Thornton and keeping McClain injury free... Having Nick Hayden in the lineup was like having a 3-man defensive line.

DT is world's better than it has been in several seasons.

I'm anxious to see how the young guys like Irving and Mayowa do. And I'm not ready to announce Tapper's retirement from the league due to back problems.

Things looked pretty good after the Draft but the situation changed pretty dramatically....at the very least I would have signed Freeney and/or recently Kruger or Ryan Davis
