The Cowboys selected Oklahoma's Charles Tapper in the fourth round. One NFC scout told me he believes that pick was one of the best in the draft.

Why? He's 6'3" and 271 pounds and runs a 4.59 40-yard dash.

What scared some teams, this scout explained, was that Tapper has the sickle cell trait. It's considered relatively minor, presenting a problem mostly in conditions such as high altitudes. The Cowboys don't play in Denver this season, and the NFL hasn't placed a franchise on Mount Kilimanjaro, so he'll be just fine.

This was a great selection in the 4th round, not just because it being a position of need, but because of his measurables. A strong, fast player with good size and its still very early in his football career. If he stays focused on football, even though it wasnt his passion early he can be a very good nfl player.

If we ever play in a mosquito infested stadium in Africa we'll have a ringer.

I hate that I missed the majority of the Draft. I'm going to have to dive into the board and do a LOT of reading to catch up.
It sounded like a party I should have been at!

I think Tapper has a decent chance to start this year and may be a long term starter.

If DLaw's suspension holds out, I think Irving, Russell and maybe British Crawford compete to start at LDE for the first four games. I think Irving wins, but DLaw gets the spot back when he returns, with Irving being a nice backup and Russell gets cut.

At RDE I see Tapper competing with Mayowa. I think Mayowa might get the nod because of experience, but I think Tapper has more upside and is stronger against the run. When Gregory returns, unlike DLaw, he is not handed the starting spot. He will get his time on passing plays, but I don't think the Cowboys will want to start him, partly because struggles against the run and party because they can't count on him to be around.

They were saying when he was picked he has the sickle cell trait but doesn't actually have sickle cell anemia.

If that's accurate that would mean he doesn't have the painful flare ups or other associated symptoms.
