Choice was also against a DB, and not even against one that was actually trying to tackle him.
It was a defensive back, but it was a 6'1", 200 lb. safety. And the guy wasn't trying to tackle him, but he was lowering his shoulder to knock him out of bounds.

If a guy lowers his shoulder to hit a player, and then ends up on his backside due to a stiffarm, that's impressive.

To me it's not impressive, so we'll agree to disagree.

The guy did little more than flail an arm to try and knock him out of bounds, and literally slowed down once he got beside Choice. The only reason he lowered his shoulder was to try and absorb the bump, which didn't help much. How are you going to tackle a guy running beside him?

You want to see real stiff arms, I've collected a few samples for you:

Those are stiffarms. Pushing a guy over that is letting up while you are both headed out of bounds doesn't do anything. The cuts were what made that a highlight, not him pushing a guy over as he was going out of bounds.

That second one was the best, a de-cleater with a stiff-arm! WOW!

LOL... great comedy, that.

The first one, the defender is on the balls of his feet. What balance.

The second one, the defender runs practically upright into it. Guess he just didn't see it coming? Again, little impact on the defensive side.

The third one had something to it, but not that memorable. I tend to agree with theo this time.

None of those guys looked like they were really going to punish the ball carrier and tackle him. They have in common that the defender went to the ground from a stiffarm, but in two of three cases, I doubt the ball carrier was going to be taken down by the defender, based on the tentative approach.

jmo

There are posts galore here when the Dallas defense attempts weak wrap-ups like this. God help us if that's the case.

Theo didn't think it was impressive. ;)
Did I say it wasn't impressive?

I said it's less impressive. And it is, considering that DB looked about 20-30 lbs. lighter than the back.

Yeah yeah, we all understand your man love for Choice.

Me? I'll take a stiffarm that leads to yards over a stiffarm that leads to nothing. To me, yards are impressive.

I don't care if the guy was lighter, when you stiff arm a guy and he's parallel to the ground in midair, that's impressive. Especially when you make it look like it was nothing.

Pushing a guy over that was going to try and bump you out of bounds with his elbow is not impressive. Again, the reason the play was a highlight was because of the cuts, not pushing a safety over on your way out of bounds.

He doesn't make those cuts, and there is no stiffarm. There's a 3 yard run. With or without the stiffarm, the play would have ended there.

Your point seems to boil down to the fact that a stiffarm is most impressive when it gains more yardage. However, that's more a factor of location and timing and says nothing really of the stiffarm itself.

Whatever. Putting a bigger defender on his butt when he's lowering his shoulder is much more impressive to me than stiffarming a tiny defensive back that's already offbalance and falling down.

Maybe it doesn't say anything about the stiff arm, fortunately, football is all about location and timing, so it says something about football.

You're right. But saying a stiffarm itself isn't impressive is one thing. Saying it didn't get him extra yardage is another.

I'm saying both. :laugh2:

I also said the cuts in traffic were impressive, and that him not just running out of bounds and avoiding the contact shows he's tough and physical though.

I just don't think the video makes it to Youtube if not for the cuts, if he had simply rounded the corner and no one was there and he got forced out of bounds by a safety, but pushed him over in the meantime, there wouldn't be a video. It'd be Choice getting forced out by the last guy he had to beat to take it to the house.

I doubt anyone hear would say picking Choice where we picked him was not a nice value. If he can stay off the IR, he should help us.

It might not have been a punch of a stiffarm, but it was an athletic stiffarm, and it was effective. Seems like a decent runner judging by one play, lol.
