I know we don't need him. I know we need to fill other areas. But, this kid is a freak athlete with what I call pad speed, meaning, he doesn't lose any speed or agility in pads. He's Darren Sproules IMO with a touch of Percey Harvin. So it comes down to the question of do you take him or take a need when the need might get you the 4th or 5th best player at that poistion. I know we would get ripped up and down the Mississippi River if we took a reciever but ultimaley if Cooper, Womack or Vaccaro(even though im not a big fan of taking a saftey in round 1) are not there at 18 then what? You can trade down and hope you get lucky, but remember 09, or take a guy like Austin if he's there where I think he would easily put up 1200 all purpose yards and get you 5 tds his rookie year. What would be your draft strategy? What's your take on Austin.

personally, I would lose my mind if we took a WR in round 1...unless, of course, we go out and sign a RT and Moore in FA for the OL...that's not likely to happen...but, the OLine is in need of some TLC...grabbing a WR, whether he is the BPA or not at the time would be a mistake...austin is a talent, no question...but, the lynch mob's would have their pitchforks and blazing torches with them as they surrounded VR looking for blood....

I think if they did pick Austin, then Miles' days are numbered...but, I just can't see any WR in the first 3 or 4 rounds...

If the guards/tackles are gone and safety is gone, then draft the best DT or DL. I"m guessing a few will be dropping if the others (OL and safety) are going before our pick.

We won't have that choice. Austin is the hottest name in the draft right now and projected to be gone before we pick.

Drafting with need in mind is unavoidable, but talent and opportunity overrides everything. If the Cowboys have evaluated Austin as, say, their #5 player in the draft (not likely, I know) and the offers to move down are not commensurate with the value difference between that #5 player and the next best available player, you take Austin.

If you don't trust the work you did before the draft then you have no business running and executing a draft.

Wait by the phone until Minny or San Fran calls and take whichever offer is the best to trade down.

If no Trades I would take Austin in a heart beat. I don't know if the cowboys would take someone like S.Williams, Werner or maybe even gamble on Tank from Florida St.

If you can't trade back, you take Austin.

When discussing the draft in the past Jerry has talked about taking a WOW player a few times. Now sometimes he is talking about trading up but either way he has talked about WOW players.

Tavon is a WOW player.

NO NO NO NO I am not even remotely talking about trading up so don't try that argument.

What I am saying is...if the OGs, DTs and S is gone that they are targeting and also none of the OTs fall....Austin would be the shiny object WOW player that would be hard for Jerry to pass on.

Agreed.

That said, I think Austin likely goes before 18. I think the Rams would have serious interest or another team like SF may try to move up with their bevy of draft picks.

That is what I see happening as well.

I didn't notice that Werner was still on the board. Hmmmm....

As long as 1 QB is drafted before our pick, which I truly believe will happen, then we are guaranteed to at least get to pick any 1 of the below:

1 of the top 2 guards
1 of the top 4 tackles
1 of the top 3 DT's
1 of the top 4 DE's
Vaccarro
Jarvis Jones
1 of the top 2 WR's (Tavon Austin or Patterson)

Either of the guards first, any of the top 3 tackles even more but very unlikely to happen and any of the 3 DT's and 4 DE's following in priority.

We need o-line worse than d-line but even more importantly the top 2 guards and 3 tackles are as blue chip as it's going to get where the d-line players are very good also, they all have some flaws in comparison.

After all of that I would take Austin, Jarvis Jones, Vaccaro and Patterson in that order. Jarvis Jones is too talented regardless of scheme. I don't see Vaccarro as any better than D.J Swearinger and we don't need to further invest in the 2nd or 3rd best corner at this point.

Milliner won't fall, but if he did I would make the exception and have 1 very pricey FS in Carr. But absolutely no passing game would out duel our secondary as long as we have reasonable pressure.

If all our targets are gone, go BPA.

I'd take Austin in a heartbeat. I don't like the idea of settling for Sly Williams and/or a trade down because we just 'have' to get a lineman. Austin is a difference maker and if you have a chance to take him and everybody else you like better is already off the board, just take him.

But he's even smaller than Cole Beasley. Austin is 5'8, 174, Beasely is 5'8, 178

I DO like Tavon. Alot

But both Sproles (190) and Harvin (5/11 184) are bigger players with the same skills.

Exactly. I love Sly, but he is Hatcher and Austin is Percy Harvin.
