Stats are not everything. Making plays is sometimes as simple as making a regular tackle at the critical moment. Or forcing the offense to do something other then what they want to do on a critical play. Mays simply has not done it. He is poor in coverage. He is a workout wonder who will do little as a Pro.

If a DB does not make plays in college he will not make plays in the pros.

Troy Polamalu's college stats - 281 tackles 6 INT 2-time AP All-American
Adrian Wilson's college stats - 254 tackles 3 INT
Taylor Mays' college stats - 276 tackles 5 INT 3- time AP All-American

Polamalu is a 5X Pro Bowler in the NFL. Wilson is a 3X Pro Bowler.

We see what we want to see.

O.K. Here's what I see:

Now granted I haven't watched Mays his whole career. My interest was piqued last season. So, wh3en USC games were aired, here, I watched.............for Taylor Mays. The result? Thoroughly disappointed. You never noticed the guy. When you DID notice him it was him making a play on a running back 15-20 yards from the LOS. I also noticed that the guy hardly ever wraps up when he tackles. He folds his arms at his chest and tries to lay people out. He tries to make the "highlight hit". He's gonna make highlights in the NFL. The tag below them will read "Toast".

Now, I hate the whole "youtube evaluation" method becuase it's clearly only a collection of the player's best plays. But, I had to look at Mays' because, with all this hype, there's got to be some greatness in a highlights only video, right? WRONG. I watched 4 highlight videos of Mays and failed to see a single play that would be considered "special" on any level of football. I'll tell you what I did see. A guy that is going to be a personal foul machine in the NFL. He does three things well: He head hunts (personal fouls), he ankle tackles (toast for an NFL player), and he fails to wrap up.

But you should have seen him at the combine! He was FAAAASSST.

Mays is quite a physical specimen and quite athletically gifted....IMO, that has hurt him, not helped him. He seems to have gotten by on his natural gifts alone, without actually working to perfect technique and skill. He is the football version of Harold Minor (remember, the next Michael Jordan). All the athletic ability in the world, but not worth $0.02 as a football player.

And let me guess - as basis for comparison you also watched Troy Polamalu his whole career.

And your scouting credentials come from...?

Hey, Chris In Southern Cal,

Lane Kiffin will win you multiple national titles at USC.

Kiffin can flat out coach. I don't appreciate some of the things that he and his staff did after he left this place. There was some lying going on for sure and some unethical behavior by him and his staff. I have some inside information on it.

However, he will win you some national titles at USC.

You will love his swagger, because it will transfer to your team. He has a great offensive mind.
