Tony Dorsett is the reason why I am a Cowboy fan. This, while not exactly news, is very sad to hear, and I wish him and his family as much peace and a minimal of suffering through this.

What was his name?
Dad fought in New York at the Stillman's gym. Sam Squyres was his name.
He fought Frankie Bartel the number four contender for the middle weight title.
The mob controlled the fights and told dad after the fight they'd sign him to a contract.
Dad refused because they told him if they needed him to take a fall he'd have to.
Dad passed and he never fought again. He was finished.

Dorsett is the reason I'm a cowboy fan. After That 99 yard TD run against Minnesota I was hooked.

Me too. A former Commanders fan, when the Cowboys drafted TD, I was Dallas-down from then on.

I feel bad for anyone pre 90's that played in the NFL dealing with this. In the 90's both equipment and pay took a leap forward. You have a right to know the risks however I highly doubt many former players from the 90's onward would do a thing different even if they spent a week in a CTE wing of a hospital before the draft. I sincerely hope the equipment companies figure a solution soon it is sorely needed.

This is why you can't get at players wishing the most money during contract time or getting out of the game early.

Actually this news came out 2 years ago.

Tony Dorsett battling CTE
Feb 9, 2015
ESPN.com news services

Hall of Fame running back Tony Dorsett, who was diagnosed with having signs of chronic traumatic encephalopathy in 2013, said he is "in a battle" and that he had no idea "that the end was going to be like this."

CTE is a degenerative condition many scientists say is caused by head trauma and is linked to depression and dementia. It is indicated by a buildup of tau, an abnormal protein that strangles brain cells in areas that control memory, emotions and other functions.

Dorsett was diagnosed along with Joe DeLamielleure and Leonard Marshall in November 2013 after undergoing brain scans and clinical evaluations at UCLA.

Yeah, he was diagnosed 4 years ago, after showing signs of cognitive decline for a few years prior.
This is essentially one of the brain's responses to chronic trauma, and it's progressive -- gets worse over time.

Not everyone is so noticeably affected; there's a lot we still don't know.

The gear will get better because there's so much money riding on it.

BTW, cheerleading is associated with 65-70% of all catastrophic injuries in female sports activities, mostly caused by pyramids with throws, jumps, and flips.
(note: I'm not blaming Egypt)

Don't most 62-year-old men experience declining mental abilities?

Alzheimer's is rampant, and most of those folks didn't play football.

Not to be cold, but I hate the automatic assumptions that are made with this topic these days.

I thought the only way to accurately diagnose this was after death?

Seems to still be the case according to the Mayo Clinic
