As speed just said, he is trying to force the guys into concentrating despite any distractions or adversity they may face. Considering how often Witten false starts, I can see the merit in the approach.

Pope tends to use unconventional methods such as this. The other day, his group was catching passes while wearing swim goggles, or at least I think that was the report. The objective is pretty straight forward, but interesting enough to keep his guys engaged while drilling fundamental points early on in camp.

Unrelated to this but about maintaining focus. Bob Lilly used to practice touching his own eyeball without blinking while the team was watching film. He said he didn't want someone's fingers inside the face mask distracting him and his focus on the football.
