He had a really average at best QB the last season; and a just a bit better than average QB the season before.
And he still put up great stats.
Basically you just do not like him and no FACTS will change your mind, so just admit it.
I like him.

I just see this type of TE in every draft and how often are these TEs drafted and just underwhelm.

He may be awesome and he may be mid. I just don’t know how you can tell with these guys anymore.

TE is a spot where athleticism really plays, especially size and speed. And Mayer's just not fast enough to get me interested.

People always want to comp Mayer to Jason Witten. But Witten was a frickin' stud athlete. Coming out of Tennessee, he weighed in at 6'6" 264 and ran a 4.65. That's almost identical to Gronk coming out of Arizona - it's actually a little better.

Mayer is 15 lbs smaller than Witt. If this is boxing or UFC, he's a weight class down. And he's still slower.

You know who his combine is almost identical to? Dalton Schultz.

The true next Gronk, next Witten in this class is Darnell Washington. His height-weight-speed is literally a Witten cloned 6'6"-264-4.64, and he's a monster blocker.

MartyB had better measurables than Witten...

So many combine heroes never do much. Measureables should never outweigh game tape or interviews. It was in the interview part that the first warning signs showed for Marty B.

That’s how I see it too.

I think Mayer is going to be a good pro too but he’s just not going to scare defenses.

He was a very good TE once he got out of Dallas.

One of the better TEs in the league.

This. Marty B had a strong 10 year career, so being "the next Marty B" is not at all a poor outcome.

Dallas drafted him to be the #2 TE on a Garrett offense that ran shotgun 11 fifty times a week... that wasn't a Marty problem.

Yea, I’m getting tired of hearing the Witten comp for Mayer. It’s awful.

Witten was a 6’6 / 260 pound house that ran 4.65.

Like you said Mayer is a tick under 6’5 and 245 and ran slower.

Lazy eval.

Lol, replied to the other thread about your reaction to Mayer.
If McClay thinks he's the BPA ill go with it.

It wouldn’t surprise me knowing the Cowboys, but I think there will be better options available.

I’ve accepted the fact Mayer may be a real possibility at #26. I think there is sound justification for taking him there.

I think a lot of people during the lead up to the draft look at the roster in 2-D on paper as in “why would we take Player X, when we have Players Y and Z on the roster already?”

The problem is folks don’t account for the realities of the sport. Someone is gonna get hurt, someone is gonna miss extended time due to injury.

All we effectively have on the roster is Fergy, Hendershot, and McKeon (I think). I think Ferguson is a legit replacement starter for Schultz. Hendershot is an overrated development player but has some upside. McKeon is a classic 3rd TE type.

That group is “fine” on paper, but if an injury happens to Ferguson the team us screwed at the position. Drafting a guy like Mayer makes sense because he’s an instant starter and provides you insurance at TE.

That sounds as if you're disrespecting McClay.... if the process thinks a WR, RB or even a TE is the best player I think we have to accept the professionals opinion.

I think any time we reach for need I’m going to disrespect the process.

Yep, a lot of us using our subjectivity in the process....rather than the professional analysis of the actual player.
You can see why Mayer isn't liked, he's not a highlight reel....so the amateur critic assumes he's not that much of an upgrade on what we've got.
Fans watch the ball, and don't really value those that help facilitate and allow playmakers to function.

You're the one reaching for need if you take the WR over a better ranked RB or TE.
I'm believing in McClay (regardless of his choice), you're backing your opinion (which is somewhat influenced by position).
