I never liked McCarthy’s high school idea of having different captains every week. I mean look at the guys who have been captains lately....it’s a joke.

While this silly practice has absolutely nothing to do with injuries or the terrible defense or our record, I do think it’s time for Mike to find and name permanent captains for the rest of the season, and those captains should be given the responsibility of not only giving 100% while on the field, even if they have to take more breaks, but they also need to be told to get in the faces of players when need be, shake players on the sideline, while leading by example.

Personally, I’d go with Martin, DLaw, and our best special team gunner. There are players that have been here and are respected by others for effort if not numbers. It’s time to use them instead of the current practice of sharing the C on the jersey of guys who will never be viewed as captains.

What I hated about this idea is that he doesn’t name the weekly captains until gameday (or maybe it was Saturday?), if I’m not mistaken.

Name the captains on Monday... and that would force them to ACT LIKE captains all week. They’d have the added pressure of being the first to arrive/last to leave and also step up their vocal leadership.

What’s the point of naming them captains on Saturday or gameday? “Oh cool, guess I’ll be there for the midfield coin toss!”

DLaw respected for his effort? Really?

No way I’d make Dalton or DaNoochie a captain just because they play QB.
Martin is the only player on offense that can currently get anyone’s attention.

I don’t think the team captains ranks in the top 20 of problems with this team
As stated in the OP. But we do need leadership, and most teams vote on their captains because they respect them. I’m simply saying this idea of running out jokes like Woods or Lewis as Captains ridiculous.

Who the hell cares about who goes out on the coin flip?
Team Captain supposed to be the buttkicker of the team the guy you dare not cross

I wouldnt give any of them the patch right now

Players should pick captains to me
But our team leader is out and I don’t see many leaders left
Not just anyone is a leader

It is a rarity in professional sports - but have no doubt it hasn't been done before.
I have no problem with it. It's this head coach's way of recognizing different players throughout the season. There's probably a few situations behind it...say a special teams member made a significant play to contribute to a win; a long-time veteran has made known he is retiring when the current season is over; through his practice and play in previous games, a reserve has earned a starting role.
The designation of team captains varies throughout all of athletics across time.. the different sports around the world...the traditions established.

I get that, but even when I was coaching in HS, we had team captains for the season with one spot open. Coaches filled that one spot each week by naming the hustler of the previous week, a guy who sold out in practice and the game the previous week.

Leaders are always leaders. You can't just turn it off and on each week.

That makes more sense.
