Team needs - Do you agree?

CB is an interesting list. We have Newman, Jenkins and Scandrick. That's a solid three deep CB roster. It would be nice to get a 4th CB to ensure that the Worst Cowboy Ever--Alan Ball--never sees the field.

But you would be drafting a 4th CB. No one we draft--even in the 2nd round--will be higher than 4th on the depth chart. Hardly a pressing need. (If your team's biggest need is a 4th CB, then you have the greatest personnel department ever).

We certainly could use a solid starting safety to go with Hamlin. I think that will come from drafting a safety in the 2nd or 3rd and letting that rookie compete with Sensabaugh, Watkins, Courtney Brown and Battle. It may be Sensabaugh. Or it may be a rookie. But I think that position is the most likely place we could draft a starter. And because we are talking potential starter, I think we have to say that is the biggest need.

Other than possibly safety, no position on field would be filled by a rookie.

I'd like to see us invest in a talented WR who can do spot duty his first year and grow into a starter opposite Roy if Miles does not own the position.
I'd like to see a solid backup NT for Ratliff.
I'd like to see a strong ILB to push Brooking and supplant him next year.
I'd like to see a 4th CB to get rid of Ball.
I'd like to see a 3rd developmental QB to be taken.

And, of course, I'd like to see a few O-line prospects because we apparently hit on about 10% of them so we need to take a shotgun approach to drafting them.

Most of those needs are building for the future. The only ones that could contribute this season, in my opinion, would be safety, backup NT and 4th CB.

1. CB

NT? ILB?

just a quick point about NT. I think drafting a mammoth run-stopper NT is vital to this team and would allow us to be more versatile against running teams like the Skins and Giants. If we draft a big mammoth NT it could allow us to use Ratliff as DE some and would create more mismatches for us. all the top 3-4 defenses have mammoth run stopping NT's

New England- Wilfork - 6'2 325
Baltimore-Gregg/Ngata - Gregg 6'0 315 pounds, Ngata 6'4 345 pounds
Pittsburgh-Hampton - 6'1 325 pounds
San Diego-Williams - 6'3 350 pounds

all wide bodies

Dallas - Jay Ratliff - 6'4 302

not a wide body

Interesting you mention Kelly Gregg, because he entered the league as a lightweight motor guy, and certainly was not a "wide body" when he was drafted.

Proof positive that "wide bodies" can be made.

Who do you suggest we draft then?

D Scott could put on another 10-15 lbs (so they say), but I think the Cowboys see him more as a DE.

Ron Brace? Very split opinions on him.

Guys like R Miller are not 325 lbs+.

There are guys like the player from Stillman (his name escapes me right now), but they are a big question mark.

The most viable option may already be on the team in Siavii. Honestly, I haven't seen him in pre-season or TC to really have an informed opinion. But it seems that Wade genuinely likes this player.

I know a lot of posters think because he didn't make the team last season he's garbage, and maybe he is, but sometimes it takes some players a bit longer to catch on.

Sammie Lee Hill.

There are $ 6.25 million reasons (see iEllis) the Cowboys are bringing in Lawrence Sidbury Jr. and David Feinuke. Don't be surprised when Dallas drafts a rush outside linebacker in round 2 or 3. Team chemistry is being stressed; furthermore, Greg Ellis is a selfish player. Plus, he costs a mint.

I know many will not agree, but don't be shocked if Jauquin Iglesias (WR) is playing in Dallas next year. He is a round 2 or 3 target, imo. When the WRs fall, Iglesias is a steal in round 3. Jerry Jones has said he wants to be Tony Romo friendly. This move would be just that. If you could pick one player to replace Patrick Crayton in the slot and play flanker, it would be the WR from Oklahoma. Iglesias could come in and contribute immediately.

Offensive line and safety are two areas that will be addressed in the draft. Dallas needs two safeties in this draft who are good special teams players. David Bruton (FS Notre Dame) would be a great 4th round pick. He could be groomed to take over for Hamlin, and he was a great special teams player (gunner) in college. He's a perfect fit in Dallas' scheme. The interior of the offensive line will get help in this draft.

Edit:

I don't bet, but if I did, I would bet on Jason Williams being a Dallas Cowboy. He's a freakish athlete, and he is exactly what the Cowboys are looking for on the other side of Bradie James. He would be a 3 down guy who should thrive in coverage.

Real Back ups behind:

NT: Ratliff, ?
OT: Flo, Colombo, ?
C: Gurode, ?
S: Sensabaugh, Hamlin, ?
G: Bigg, Kosier, Holland, ?
CB: Newman, Jenkins, Scandrick, Ball, ?
OLB: Ware, Spencer, Ellis, ?
ILB: Brady James, Brooking, Stewart, ?
WR: RW, Crayton, Austin, Hurd, Stanback, ?
ST's: Felix Jones, Austin, Stanback, Crayton, ?

So So/Un-proven players like: Siavii, Free, Procter, Watkins, & Barbie are the ones we need to "Churn" in the draft and Fa. When you break it down like this it makes you realize we have some holes to fill...

Would everybody please put down the Junior Savii/ Tim Anderson crack pipe.:banghead: These guys are training camp fodder/ draft smoke screen.

I really like our starters and top reserves. Nothing jumps out as a glaring need. We just need to take RB's and TE's off the board and go BPA.

My wish list in truely no particular order:

1) WR/PR
2) S
3) CB
4) OG
5) OT
6) NT
7) ILB
8) QB

It's my hope we use most of our 11 picks. Maybe trade for and extra 2010 pick.
I want at least 8 players selected. Increase the competition and improve the talent of our special teams.

No. Mine are ILB, S, G/T, CB, WR. I'd also throw NT in there, but maybe Bowen can backup Ratliff. Not heard anything about this, but I guess it's possible.

2 technique or wide body run stopping cover NT. By far the greatest need.

OL depth. You want to put that first I wouldn't argue much.

Mo LB esp a 3 down one who can run stop, engage and disengage interior lineman, and cover. Fat chance from where we pick unless we get lucky. Wouldn't argue on this one being 1 or 2 either.

CB is always a need. Injury yada always creates depth and/or starter needs. You need four in today's NFL. So you either need one, will need one or should be developing one or two.

Passrusher. Always and this means OLB primarily in this defense.

Cover safety. This may be better than I think. I hope so.

H back, F back who can be a blocking TE. Hannah isn't a given and four would be what I'd carry anyway.

Better blocking FB. Or two H backs beside Bennett and Witten.

That enough for you?

No. Guard and Safety are bigger concerns than WR and CB. We have 3 good CBs with Scandrick, Jenkins and Newman. We will probably add another young guy in round 4-5 though.

Offensive Line depth is probably our biggest problem. I'd almost rate Tackle as a more problematic spot, even though we have nothing behind Kosier and Davis at guard.

WR is an area where I doubt we will add anything but another project player. Especially considering you have Williams, Austin, Crayton to go along with Witten, Bennett, and Felix Jones as receiving threats.
