Teammates Respond To Choice’s Team Meeting
Posted by nickeatman at 12/28/2009 3:02 PM CST on truebluefanclub.com

After two straight wins, the Cowboys players spent a lot of Monday’s open locker room period answering questions to the recent turnaround.

Several of them spoke of an impromptu team meeting called by none other than second-year tailback Tashard Choice, the team’s third running back. Apparently, Choice had an emotional, heart-filled speech to his teammates on the Monday following the Cowboys’ 20-17 loss to the Chargers. Much of the speech centered around the health of DeMarcus Ware, who had suffered the scary neck injury the day before. And as far as Choice and the players were concerned, they weren’t sure when, or if, Ware would return.

“He felt like it was important enough to tell the team what he had on his heart and on his mind,” Marcus Spears said. “And we listened. We all left the meeting room and went about our business. What he said was important and we needed to hear that.”

Choice, who has one of the most popular videos on YouTube, displaying his leadership skills at Georgia Tech, is never lost for words. As a second-year pro, he was in the same draft class as cornerback Mike Jenkins, who admitted he could’ve had done what Choice did.

“I would’ve never done that. I would’ve felt like I’m still a young guy. for him to do that, it says a lot about him and especially to the vets for not correcting him or to say, ‘who are you to be telling us this.’ It just lets you know that everyone respects each other.”

To one established veteran, and one who likes to chirp himself, Patrick Crayton said he never has a problem with a player speaking his mind, regardless how many skins on the wall he might have.

“It was fine. Fine with me,” Crayton said. “If a guy feels like he has something to say to the team and he feels is important, I’m fine with it. And he’s earned that type of respect, that everyone knows how he’s going to play on Sunday, and what he’s going to give you.”

tashard choice IS a team leader......It`s clear that his teammates think highly of him as a player and as a man...Just watching the videos on youtube showed you what type of personality he is, the guys respected him and liked him......when the young players take charge of the team and set the example, it just motivates them that much more..

I can say, this Cowboys team has one of the best rapports with each other since i`ve been watching football

PLAY THE GUY!!!

One of the most frustrating things of this season is seeing Choice languish on the bench every week.

Choice really is a player who we have to keep around. I don't know if he's anything special as a RB, but he has the rare leadership ability and the kind of heart that you don't find in many players.

We all know how special that kid is. That kind of character has as much to do with the success this year as anything.

Choice should be running our 4th and 1s....not Barber. Choice seems to ALWAYS make positive yards out of nothing.

The difference between this year and last year is night and day.

I underestimated the Owens factor. My logic was, Owens was worth the occasional headache bec. of the talent. And if the team had true leaders, it wouldn't be a problem.

Owens was more of a distraction than I thought. His production level last year wasn't worth the headache.

That being said, for the life of me, I still cannot figure out why it was a problem last year. Yeah, Owens was a polarizing figure. So what? Why couldn't it have been 52 vs 1 in the lockerroom?

(No, this isn't a "gee I wish Owens was still here" thread. I'd still have cut him even if it was 52 vs 1 because the return on investment wasn't worth it and the decision to move on was correct.... just wondering about the situation, that's all)

Maybe because the outside attention Owens attracted. I also think Owens helps plant the negitive seeds into players heads. I can promise you had he been here when Crayton was demoted he would have been telling Crayton how he was getting screwed over by the team.

Exactly! Owens is divisive in the locker room because he creates factions within the team and has done so everywhere he has been. Then he plays innocent and smiles and people are taken in by his act.

I love the fact that Romo is having such a great season and with WRs like Austin, Crayton, & Williams. Not a bonifide #1 WR in the bunch, no big names or pedigrees but Romo is getting it done with them anyway!

In the meantime, Owens is sucking in Buffalo where he can't seem to "make" any of their sorry QBs better like he did here. :lmao2:

Miles Austin has completely replaced any production Owens ever provided for us WITHOUT all the headaches. Austin is a TEAM player and a pure joy to watch.

The sooner the memory of Terrell Owens as a Dallas Cowboy is washed away the better.

I'll be honest - I wouldn't mind seeing Barber let go. Choice sold me with his performance vs. the Steelers. An average back doesn't do that to the Steelers, much less in his first year.

Barber is a very good closer - but an average starter. Choice is an emotional leader, too - vocal, too - which is something the 'Boys drastically need.

Four things I am looking forward to:

1) Press Conference announcing the next Head Coach of the Dallas Cowboys.

2) March 1st, the first day of Free Agency. We need to add some impact players and rid ourselves of some underachievers.

3) The NFL Draft, assuming we aren't just drafting Special Teamers.

4) The Dallas Cowboys winning the 2011 Superbowl in their own building.

You really expect a new coach and complete new staff to come in here and lead this team to SB in our new stadium, and in one season? I don't care if you could somehow get Tom Landry, or Jimmy Johnson, to accomplish that. New schemes, new assignments, new scouting staff ...etc Just wouldn't happen!

Name me the coach and assistant coaches that could accomplish that feat, that are available. I want to hear this. No one has been able to list them yet, when I ask.

And why all the hate on Barber? Gayle Sayers, Walter Payton, or you name the best back to ever play the game, couldn't make a first down with this blocking and scheme. Put the blame where it really belongs; on the offensive line and the play calling.

The trouble with the 52 vs 1 theory is that the whole team wasn't against TO. Many of the players actually liked him. Hurd and Choice were his two boys as evident from on-field interactions and their interviews after he left. TO also got Crayton and RW11 on his side vs Garrett, Romo, and Witten.
