Tech help with laptop

One more quick question. Can you give me the model number of the laptop? I will look and see if I can find any info on it. Might be able to find a MB cheap.

HP DV6000

Something else to look for is does it do the same thing in safe mode? Ithink for HP you have to hold the DEL key down during start up.

Hey. question about the Linux. Can you still use Microsoft programs like Excel and office and such? Are there any programs that you can't use on it?
The main drawback will be a lack of game support. Other than that, if there isn't an outright alternative there is often options that are superior to Windows based applications.

You should probably start with Ubuntu. Ubuntu.com. Might want to go with the Wubi Installer just to see if you like it.

Is it possible to load another OS in the laptop like a different windows OS other than vista? Will vista go away completely?

The quick best possible fix.

1.) Install Windows XP. (get all drivers first, put on flash drive, especially network driver)

2.) Load all windows updates.

Forget you ever heard of Vista.

If you can do that and it fixes all then its a good laptop with a few years left on it.

Otherwise, you can get a laptop to 250-300 like others have said.

You CAN run MS programs with Linux, by using WINE. That said I usually just find an alternative that is native to Linux. I have had better overall results that way. Some folks would disagree though.
Redvolution I agree that would be the easiest route, did a little research though and this seems to be a big problem with this model of HP which would lead me to believe he does indeed have a hardware issue. Could be wrong, have been at least twice in the last 5 minutes. :)

Well I'd steer clear in suggesting WINE to someone who needs technical help with his laptop in the first place. A better suggestion would probably be PlayOnLinux.

But you shouldn't really need WINE for much, as there is almost always a comparable or better alternative to a Windows program, on Linux.

I dont think Linux is a viable option for what he wants to do?

I guess I missed something. I though the main issues were to open excel docs and surf. What else?
