Personally I think its very difficult to evaluate OL coaches. We have had two successful although older OL coaches in Philbin and Solari the last few years and had pretty much the same results. At some point I think you have to look at the talent level on the OL. Steele isnt and never has been great in pass protection, yet we are slinging the ball 40-55+ times per game. Zach Martin is clearly in regression, and we have two rookies this year. People can talk about how poor the scheme is, but unless they talk specifics about why the scheme is no good its hard for me to take those arguments serious.
For me this OL has major issues in pass protection on the edges, although Guyton has shown improvement the last few games. They also have significant struggles with blocking zone runs. This is probably the biggest weakness in Cooper Beebes game, but playing Center you're going to be expected to make those second level blocks. Guyton is a monster on those gap runs, but seems to struggle moving in zone concepts.
Is coaching to blame? Maybe, but I think this OL has some significant flaws that are tough to overcome, especially given that the Cowboys dont have great talent at the skill positions either to keep defenses more honest in how they play our offense.
To me its the same endless argument we have year after year about the coaching staff. Fans are drawn to the idea of overhauling the coaches because its easier and quicker to do than to rebuild your roster, but ultimately the majority of NFL coaches are going to succeed when given talent and fail when that talent simply isnt up to par.
