Cowboys cut pay of $51M lineman, will he respond with his best season?

. Instead, they reworked his contract this spring to bring down his money and cap hit.

That likely was a front office decision they didn't want to spend the draft or financial capital to improve on the position this year, knowing that the offense can compete at a high level with him as a starter; they've done it time and time again.

The team saved almost $10 million of cap space with the new deal, which is essentially a guaranteed two-season pact with a team option and friendly terms if they want to keep him on board in 2028.

Of course they didn't want to spend a high draft pick to replace him. The Cowboys knew their defense needed all the help it could get. Drafting Shelton in the 4th was them hoping he could be a possible starter in 2027 or 2028 if they decide to move on from either tackle.

I've been saying all off season if Guyton and Steele are so bad, how did they manage to be #2 in yards and #7 in scoring last year? Yes there were spells they couldn't get a 1st down and 2nd halves they couldn't score. But so did other teams. That is how they managed to rank so high.

We spend enough on the o-line in the last few years, time to invest in another position maybe a 1st round FB!

It’s pretty simple….the cowboys offense was probably not deserving of the #2 spot and it’s inflated because they ran the most plays of anyone in football last year behind a bad defense that had them trailing frequently. Before anyone twists my words I’m not saying the cowboys offense is bad, in fact I acknowledge it’s a very good unit, but realistically they were probably closer to a top 10 unit than they were a top 5.

Realistically the cowboys offense may drop a couple spots in the rankings this season but still be a better and more efficient unit in 2026 If they can get better production out of their tackles and TE positions. The cowboys defense not forcing the offense to put up 40 points to win games would help in that regard too.

The cowboys offense in terms of EPA per play were behind LAR, NE, GB, and Buffalo by a decent amount. They were lumped right with Chicago, Indy, DET, SF in that 2nd tier of offenses….again not bad at all, but certainly not at the elite status of the unit being so good they couldn’t upgrade a position or two.

That would be because of Dak, Williams, Cee Dee and Pickens. A good QB like Dak knows how to play around a weak link on the OL. Not optimal, but it is what it is. All QB’s have to do so to be able to perform to their best.

Let’s not get crazy.

We just gave a guy the third most guaranteed FB money in NFL history because he’s the man, the myth, the legend, HUNTER LUEPKE!

Drafting another fullback would be an insult to his legacy.

I mean, there’s no way you can replace those 71 rushing yards he had last year.

The man had a 60.5 PFF grade! I mean, he cracked the bottom tier of “average”!

For your information the Cowboys had the 2nd best offense in the NFL last year.

So if you’re going to crap on the Cowboys, at least get your facts straight.

I'm pretty sure he was being sarcastic.

Yeah except I didnt crap on the cowboys lol. I crapped on the tackles and TE who need to perform better. Would you disagree?

They’re #2 in terms of overall yardage. Yards are not the only indicator of success/failure. Total yards also don’t tell the story for all 11 starters.

Just suggesting that the cowboys have the #2 offense in football and ending the conversation completely ignores how brilliant Dak was early in the season. It completely ignores the impact of having 2 elite WRs on the field has.

If you want to act like everything is perfect and the cowboys don’t need to look to improve then you do you, but don’t come crapping on the posters looking to have actual adult conversations on the board.

is it too hard to be sarcastic in here without people going nuts calm down my friend, maybe I should have said a 1st round punter and that would have made you react in a more calm state!!! Sheesh

Exactly. I always chuckle at the "yards per game" crowd that uses that to decide which offense is good and which is bad.

We were 7th in scoring. So I would say our offense was more in the 2-7 range. And there is nothing wrong with that.

Iggy iggy is where he's at!!!!! You're one of my favorite posters on here, and to see you go at it with him like this (not in a major way) but it just gets to be old!

It would take a lot for Steele to win over this fanbase.

Doug Free took a pay cut and was actually a pretty solid player, but the board never stopped hating him.

There was an article early in the offseason illustrating the cost of replacing Steele vs a replacement and it really did appear keeping him here another season was the best move to build the entire roster.

He isn’t that good, never was, and should never have been given that contract.

Even scarier is that until we see if progress was made on the other side, Steele is the best tackle on the team. Think about exactly that for a second.

This why Guyton is probably the key. The job is his because of the investment to get him…that’s how it works in Dallas, which we all know. He basically HAS to have improved a great deal.
