Terrell Owens In "Reasonable Cause" Testing Program

To be fair, it's the top story on ESPN.com, but it's not part of their Breaking News header.

Looking at espnnews, there's no breaking news lead on the bottomline that I see right now referring to T.O.

I really don't see this being blown up like normal.

The story doesn't have to be a headliner to keep repeating. In reality, the league tried to contact Owens. They failed and automatically enforced a minor rule. That should be the end of the story and should never be mentioned again since, by definition, it is a small issue at best.

However, I may be in the minority that this story will not be mentioned again in a couple of days. That could happen, but I sincerely doubt it.

If Owens can use a cellphone, and there is any legitimate reason to think that he can't, why would he have any difficulty using a prepaid cellphone? My sound effects' resume isn't as impressive as yours, gosh darn it!

Of course I get "it." And of course TO is bigger news in the same way that McCain or Obama is bigger news than a podunk city mayor. TO is treated differently because he is different. And I still contend that the amount and tone of the coverage has been appropriate considering who he is.

Bear in mind I'm basing my opinion on ESPN's print/website coverage. I haven't watched the talking heads yet.



They have no case. There's no justification for anger. In this instance, ESPN is an innocent bystander. Let's save the vitriol for when they legitimately cross the line.

Wow! Did you see ESPN overexaggerate Cedric Benson missing OTAs and then getting released??? I mean, if it was Richard Bartel or some other no-name that isn't expected to make the squad, there wouldn't have been a peep, but bam, you get somebody who is a first-string RB and now it's all over the place. They need to stop picking on Benson and DA BEARS over at ESPN, IT'S NOT FAIR!

Regardless, I remember something similar happening to Marcus Washington in 06 I believe. He said it was a huge pain and really distracting but now he's out of it and no big deal.

Owens was warned that he risks a suspension if administrators experience a similar road block as when they attempted to reach him two weeks ago. On one occasion, the primary phone number Owens provided was that of Drew Rosenhaus. Subsequently, the sources said, the alternate phone number Owens provided went unanswered, except for an automated message that communicated, "The voice mailbox for this user is full." Owens told the league that his phone had not shown any record of its missed calls.

Be nice to know from the NFL how many missed calls a year there are?

Per Ndanger, what happens when wealthy football players are in places outside of normal communication.

They need to go to the local Circle-K and buy a $20.00 phone card...

Here's a statement from Terrell Owens via his publicists about being placed in the "reasonable cause" testing program.

"This was a communication problem involving cell phone numbers. It was openly discussed and cleared up in a meeting that I had at the NFL Office last week. I have been in the NFL for over 12 years and have never had a positive test for substance of any kind. That includes tests that took place as recently as last month. The matter was resolved to everyone's satisfaction last Tuesday, and everyone has moved on."

The big question: Can T.O. turn this into an endorsement opportunity with a cell phone company?

So, is Owens claiming that this was the NFL's fault due to them attempting to contact him via an incorrect cellphone number? Well, if that's the case, eveyone can expect the league to respond to that statement since it implies that the league was wrong in enforcing it's own rule.

He actually said 58&#37; passer rating, which of course makes no sense. Makes even less sense considering Campbell had a 77 passer rating. His completion percentage sits at 57.7% for his career and 60% for last season.

But he did state that the issue was resolved to everyone's satisfaction. 'Everyone' implies the NFL also. So, if Owens gave the NFL the correct number(s) to contact him, he's implying that the NFL had his correct contact information and that the NFL used old or incorrect numbers to reach him.

It states at the beginning of the thread that Rosenhaus' voicemail box was full. If that were indeed the case, Rosenhaus wouldn't have received a message via his phone. His Caller ID might have clued him in as to whom may have attempted to call and leave a message, but couldn't. He would then be obligated to call each number back that didn't leave a message, but would he? Would anyone?

It sounds like the league couldn't get a hold of Rosenhaus either. I also wonder if the league contacts the team when they can't get a hold of the player. I would think Jerry could track down his players pretty quickly to avoid this kind of action.
