TERRY GLENN WILL BE BACK

One thing I have learned during my NFL career, is that players that were amazingly fast, have longer careers. Joey Galloway, James Lofton, Willie Gault are examples of fast guys who played for a long time. And I expect Terry Glenn to bounce back and give the Cowboys a much needed vertical outside receiver. Glenn is not practicing based on the Cowboys choice, which happens to be the right choice. The key for the Boys is to get Glenn to September healthy---not June. Let him take it slow now and gradually work into the line-ups. It won’t take long for Glenn to develop chemistry with Romo. Once he is open in the secondary, Romo will find him. And the reality of them working together is for Romo to gauge his speed and know where to put the ball, not how he runs his routes. Quarterbacks need to know how fast or slow a wide out runs and that will determine where they need to place the ball. Once that is developed then all the other pieces come together very quickly.

Veteran receiver sidelined by team, not a knee injury

By CLARENCE E. HILL JR.
Star-Telegram staff writer

Star-Telegram/Tom Pennington
Terry Glenn's text message said, "I want people to know I'm not practicing, not by my choice."

IRVING -- Wide receiver Terry Glenn did not participate in the team's workouts this week, but it wasn't because of an ongoing problem with a right knee injury that caused him to miss 15 games last season.
Glenn has been working out vigorously throughout the off-season. He showed up Tuesday for team meetings and planned on joining his teammates for workouts this week.
However, he was held out of workouts by the Cowboys.
Glenn, who will be 34 on July 23 and has grown sensitive to the uncertainty surrounding his status, communicated his point of view via a series of text messages.
"Let's just say I showed up Tuesday for meetings and...," Glenn said. "Ur gonna have to do the math. I'm not going against management in the media. But I want people to know I'm not practicing, not by my choice."
Glenn declined to get into specifics about his injured right knee. He had two arthroscopic surgeries last season in hopes of getting back in time for a Cowboys' playoff run.
According to the Cowboys' medical staff, Glenn needs microfracture surgery to fully repair the injury. Because microfracture surgery would cause him to miss the entire 2008 season and thus put his career in jeopardy, Glenn opted against it. It is his hope that strengthening his hamstring and quad through vigorous rehab will return him to the field on a full-time basis next season.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones agreed that Glenn was healthy enough to participate in the organized team activities this week. And he said that Glenn will be out on the field soon. Jones said it's important that Glenn get reps with quarterback Tony Romo and be around to help tutor the team's young receivers.
But Jones said there was no reason to push Glenn out there this week. The Cowboys know what he can do, and they are trying to give the young receivers as much work as possible.
Even when Glenn does return, Jones said the Cowboys are going to be extremely cautious with him because there is no need for him to try to "win a Super Bowl in practice" or "training camp."
Jones, however, said that his caution should not be construed as anything negative regarding Glenn's prognosis for 2008. He said Glenn has looked so good that he's starting to be optimistic about him filling the need of a speedy No. 2 receiver to play opposite Pro Bowl receiver Terrell Owens.
"I'm really encouraged by the way Terry Glenn is practicing, and his strength," Jones said. "In my mind, there isn't a player out there in a given game or looking at next year that could make a bigger impact to take some of the heat off Terrell than Terry Glenn."
Glenn echoed Jones sentiments about his status.
"What Jerry Jones said is correct!" exclaimed Glenn in a text message.
Jones said at the beginning of the off-season that the Cowboys needed to add a "wow" player on offense. The Cowboys respected the job Patrick Crayton did in Glenn's absence last season, catching 50 passes for 697 yards and seven touchdowns. But they believe he is best as a third-down receiver. The team expressed interest in trading for Detroit's Roy Williams, Cincinnati's Chad Johnson or Arizona's Anquan Boldin, but was rebuffed.
Now it appears its best option might the original one -- Glenn.
He had more than 1,000 yards receiving in 2005 and 2006 before being injured last season.
Romo believes that Glenn can be the answer for the team again.
"I think Terry Glenn is going to surprise a lot of you guys," Romo said. "He's probably the one player that I think could. If the guy is healthy, he is going to play and play a lot. He's taken the approach he's going to get healthy and when he does, he will get back on the field. I assume, and I think he does, too, that he will be fine come training camp.
"I think he will surprise from the level of play that he will play at."

GLENN, COWBOYS AT ODDS?

Posted by Mike Florio on May 24, 2008, 11:22 a.m.

Receiver Terry Glenn didn’t participate in offseason workouts this week. But not because he thinks he’s not ready.

After missing 15 games in 2008 because of a knee problem, Glenn believes he’s able to get back on the practice field.

“Let’s just say I showed up Tuesday for meetings and . . . .,” Glenn said in a text message to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “Ur gonna have to do the math. I’m not going against management in the media. But I want people to know I’m not practicing, not by my choice.”

Glenn and the Cowboys’ medical staff reportedly are at odds as to whether Glenn needs microfracture surgery, a coin-flip proposition aimed at creating scar tissue that simulates the cartilage that used to be present in the joint.

Owner Jerry Jones agrees that Glenn is healthy enough to practice. So why then isn’t he on the field?

It could be that the Cowboys believe it’s only a matter of time before Glenn’s knee gets “blowed up,” and the ‘Boys would then be on the hook for his $1.74 million salary in 2008. Under this theory, the Cowboys would cut Glenn, after they have a replacement in the fold.

And that’s really the thing to keep an eye on. With June 1 coming up, it’s possible that the Cowboys have laid the foundation for a trade that will be accomplished on June 2, allowing the cap hits for any players involved in the transaction (Cowboys safety Roy Williams, for example) to be spread over two cap years.

Glenn is worth every penny - if he can see field at 95% he is better than anything on our roster or other teams rejects looking to be dumped (Roy/Mike Williams of the world) etc.

I think #81's stats would prove that false.....other than Owens, he is our best receiver.

Wow. With all these "The glass is half full" articles, I guess it was just a matter of time before "The glass is half full of piss" articles started coming out.

dont get me wrong i want glenn back..but I also want to see more of our young talent. Besides We saw what we can do with Glenn and Owens, it's not that impressive. I dont know maybe with both at 100% IT WILL BE BETTER.

If you ask me I want to see the young guns..Stanback and jefferson.

The thought of going into the season with Stanback (injury prone conversion project) or a rookie like Jefferson as a starter scares the hell out of me. I'm ok with getting them some reps in relief of Glenn to help him through the season and keep him for down the stretch while getting them up to speed a little for the 09 or 10 season. But as starters...Please let Glenn be ready to go.

We were without Glenn for a while and we did just fine... We still have Witten Owens and Crayton. We didnt miss out on Glenn at all. INfact we had better production with Glenn off the field.

I would be fine with Stanback or another rookie taking Glenns spot.

I agree, I honesty believe based on nothing of course that TG will play a big role on this team. I honestly don't think we need another great WR last year we were fine without Glenn and this year we should have him and that will allow Crayton to go back the slot where he thrives.

Yeah, TG would be great healthy. Problem is he is not. And there is no healing from having your cartridge removed.

Guys, you cannot rely on him. Nice story but we saw the results last year. His condition hasnt changed. And wont without microfrature surgery. Sounds more like he'll be lucky to have a normal life after football.

http://www.dallascowboys.com/news.cfm?editorialAuthor=1&id=0861D3F6-FBCB-392B-D80744DBFE4F5A88

That is the dilemma here: Because Glenn had torn articular cartilage from behind the right kneecap removed during last summer's second arthroscopic surgery and because he has been playing with the torn PCL suffered while in Green Bay - a bad combination, I'm told - you just never know. Could be playing today, retired tomorrow.

And here is why, as simply explained as my medically-limited mind allows: When torn articular cartilage is removed, that means something that should be there is missing. That means there is a divot in what should be the cushion between your leg bones joining behind the kneecap. Well, the more activity you have the higher percentage the friction in there will cause the existing divot to enlarge, which definitely is not good, or possibly cause another piece of the cartilage to break off, which would be terrible.

Glenn can run all he wants. He can further strengthen his quad all he can. The Cowboys can limit his participation to the bare minimum for the remainder of the off-season, during training camp and even if they get him into the season, all helping to increase his odds of playing at least another season.

But one misstep, one hard plant, possibly even just a normal stride on a go-route, and all can go for naught. That's how delicate this situation is and will continue to be.

Only microfracture surgery has a chance of helping Glenn's degenerative knee, but he rolled the dice last year, hoping that prolonging his potential availability would land him in a Super Bowl. That didn't work out quite so well, and why you probably saw the postgame scene of Glenn lingering on the bench at Texas Stadium long after the Giants eliminated the Cowboys in that playoff game, 21-17. Ah, the best-laid plans.

This just doesnt sound very encouraging.

Crayton couldn't take Glenn's spot and you would be fine with one of two guys who hasn't sniffed the field yet?

At some point wishful thinking just becomes ignorance. That point is in your rear view mirror.

Im not too sure you realize exactly how good a healthy Terry Glenn is. Hopefully he can teach you.

Based on what. Really. I don't feel comfortable at all in that scenario as I just haven't seen enough of these guys. A healthy Glenn is ridiculously important to us.

Counting on Terry Glenn to be healthy is a VERY large gamble. The Cowboys should not count on him. If he can play, let it be a great surprise....but the Cowboys need to be prepared to make a Super Bowl run without him. I'm still hoping something happens at WR after June 1.

We had a good enough offense to win a Super Bowl last year and Glenn didn't play. If he does that makes us even better, that's the stance I'm taking.

Huh? Your fine with just T.O. and craytron. Yeah everything was smooth when T.O. was healthy and if he doesn't get hurt we would have been in the SB with a healthy Glenn on the field we would have won it. But when T.O. got hurt our chances went with him. I know he made it back for the playoffs but he wasnt 100 percent and Glenn was still rusty and it showed. After them we have no proven depth at WR.

Just think how potent this offesne would be with a healthy Glenn and T.O. on the field at the same time. So we need Glenn next year and hopefully he can go.

This offense was stride for stride (nearly) with New England for most of the year. It didn't have Glenn, it wasn't cheating, and it had a tougher schedule.

With a healthy Terry Glenn, playing where he was two seasons ago, I don't think there is any doubt that we have the best offense in the NFL. Crayton returns to the #3 spot where he is much more valuable, even more pressure is taken off our run game, things are opened up more for TO.

Without Glenn we can still be one of the best in the league. With Glenn, we approach otherworldly, I think. He is a fantastic player - it would be great to have him back.
