We went over this last year. Cover 4 is NOT a four-deep zone. In Cover 4, the cornerbacks play man-to-man on the outside receivers. The safeties play man-to-man on the inside receiver on their side IF that player runs a vertical route. If that player cuts his route short, the safety then doubles the outside receiver on his side.

On the first Moss play last season, Roy's man (Cooley) ran a deep post, and Roy correctly covered him. When the ball was thrown, he followed the ball and almost got there in time to break it up. But he had NO coverage responsibility on Moss on that play. It was purely Glenn's coverage.

On the second Moss play, Roy's man (Cooley again) ran an out at medium depth, but he didn't cut it short soon enough for Roy to be in position to cover Moss over the top (Roy actually correctly anticipated that Cooley wouldn't run a vertical route, but it still wasn't soon enough). That's why Roy said he was stuck in a spot where he has to cover two players and why Parcells said it "wasn't really Roy's play." Because of the coverage and the routes involved, Roy would have had to have ignored his primary responsibility (Cooley) in order to help Glenn cover Moss.

Do some of you realize that other teams including the Cowboys run offensive plays to counter certain defenses....If he doesnt cover Cooly then he would have got the ball It's really nobodys FAULT it's just a good play to a good WR

and another question if the safteys are covering the inside recievers than who was newman covering? newman plays the slot. Did Davis double whoever newman had or did the get a running back. Im assuming alot on this play because i havent seen it in a while. Just watching it. The first play Newman was playing a zone because he let a reciever release into the middle of the field. So i dunno if newman was a part of the man to man coverage but i know he was not playing man to man.

at the 44 second mark watch Roy, Glenn, Davis and Henry its obvoius there all playing a deep zone. They are not watching one certain guy just backpedaling. It might not be called cover 4 but there playing a 4 deep zone, im not blaiming anyone im just trying to point out the defense

A soft Cover 4 might look like a four-deep zone at some point, such as when there's one receiver on each side running a 9, but that doesn't mean it was a simple four-deep zone. If Cooley had run a post again instead of a 12-yard out, it would have looked different.

Parcells already explained the coverage last season, so if you need further explanation, I can dredge up some year-old threads for you.

Like I said earlier, the three guys underneath are responsible for short zones. The corners and safeties are primarily in man coverage on vertical routes, with the possibility of double-team help, depending on which receivers do what.
