Texans to interview Will McClay

Philly only blocked the interview until their playoff run is over, so basically next week this time.

Yeah, they can't stop him from interviewing for a GM spot once they are out of the playoffs.

The team hasn't won more than 9 games in like 6 seasons.
this here alone, makes the Texans job appealing. O'Brien has won 9 games several years with no name QBs, including winning with Weeden. He also has as many playoff appearances and wins in his time with the Texans as Garrett. Garrett had a true franchise QB in Romo for most of his career, and has an 8-8 average. Furthermore most people would bet that Watt, even if he came back at 80%, along with Merciless and Clowney make that defense pretty special. If you take those blue colored glasses, you'd see that the hated Texans are no that far away from being really good.

Jerry will pay him more than the Texans can. Question is, does McClay value money or the title of GM more?
With more money than he's making now AND the GM title................See ya, McClay.

Oh yeah, he wouldn't have to work with Jed either.

You guys never cease to amaze me. I could break down all the personnel moves over the Will McClay years as the assistant to the assistant to the actual GM and show you it's not all that great but you'll still look to him like he's Ron Wolf on PEDs.

I can just imagine the hysteria if he does leave. Mourning a figment of your imagination.

What are we really losing if he goes? What is so great about the state of the team now as opposed to 10 years ago?
I think the issue is that he's is the best of a mediocre (at best) bunch.

If he's gone, the chances of getting somebody better to replace him that can actually work with the Jones boys are slim.

Hence, it's a net loss to the team if he leaves.

And he's more than just the guy who puts the draft board together. He's the go between between the scouts, coaches and Jerry/Stephen. That in itself deserves battle pay.

Not sure who else that is better at putting a draft board together, yet handle the inevitable chaos once Jerry gets involved in the drafting process starting in March/April.

He would be crazy to go the Texans right now. They are more dysfunctional than the Cowboys. They have a GM (Rick Smith) that is practically family with McNair will be around as long as Smith wants to be around, McNair is not going to fire him, as he has proved over and over again over the last 10 years. They have a coach that won't be back after this year, especially if they keep Rick Smith (they do not get along at all). My guess, unless the Texans make substantial improvement next year, (deep play off run), then Bill O will be fired, Rick will resume his place in the FO and the person that takes this "GM" role will be moved to a lesser position. Rick Smith's contract states he has 100% control over player acquisition - i.e. Draft, FA, etc.

I agree with what you said about Smith's relationship to McNair but I think stepping down to tend for his wife was a permanent break for both. Smith needs to help his wife but I think he also was close to FINALLY getting fired. He is basically the Garrett of the Texans but has made mistakes over many many years. Fans have wanted him gone for years and I think this allows he and McNair to save face despite being a serious reason to leave. Also, I think coach stays because he actually got their rookie QB to play like an stud. As long as he comes back and plays like he was, they will stick with O'Brien.

Being the go between is part of putting together the draft board. It's a team specific board.

If he goes, he goes. The reports of his genius have been greatly exaggerated.

I'd be interested in this situation if it were me...

If he's an improvement, I'm all for it.

But can he work with Jerry? In the end, that's the ultimate question.

I think Jerry has a relationship of some kind with his father, so that may help. Absolute long shot at best.

He'd be crazy not to go. He would be a lot closer to winning a ring with the Texans, (as much as I hate to admit it), than he will ever be here in Dallas. They have a budding star QB, a real super star, elite WR, arguably the best defense in the NFL, (when Watt and company return), and the official title of GM. Add and NFL caliber HC and DC, and the decision should be easy to take the job.

I completely agree. Why would anyone want to be in Dallas? The young QB is off the charts good. Now their defense is suspect, but they actually have a competent head coach as compared to the loser we have coaching the Cowboys.

Your memory must be a bad one. You clearly forget how bad the drafting was before he got here. And we have no idea how many times Jerry the idiot didnt take McClays advice and did his own thing. As I am sure he did in drafting soft Taco.

Can he just sign on with houston or deos Jerry have to release him from his contract?

I would assume since it’s a ‘vertical’ not a ‘lateral’ move Jerry can’t do anything about it as far as I understand.
