A new era in Texas football began Sunday when the Longhorns announced the hiring of Charlie Strong from Louisville.

Texas athletic director Steve Patterson praised Strong in a statement released Sunday afternoon as "a man of great integrity, with a wonderful family, who is well respected inside and outside the game."

"Our committee and former lettermen helped create an extensive selection criteria and after visiting with Charlie, it was clear he met them all," Patterson said. "He led championship defenses as an assistant, a resurgence at the University of Louisville with double-digit game winning seasons, and twice been selected conference coach of the year."

I know it was said in the other thread...just figured it needed a thread by itself.

Truly is a new era, since Strong is not the kind or PR presence that Royal and Mac were.

He's simply a great coach and motivator, an honorable man, and a charismatic recruiter. What more would a program want?

Us alums will need to get used to winning without all the BS -- something I would welcome.

I think he'll do a fine job. They needed a change.

Strong is interesting hire.
Least political guy even mentioned.

Crazy good recruiter in Florida... will be interesting to see if he stays hitting there and goes Texas/Florida.
If he does he'll dominate people in recruiting and be right there with Saban/Meyer.

I understand he gave a very impressive 40-minutes or so speech. Said all the good things. We'll get tough in the offseason weight room. Don't get bogged down in 5 and 4 stars, go after FOOTBALL players. Etc, etc. Sounded impressive from the tweets I read about his quips. I think he'll do okay at Texas. Looking forward to it. The word was that the entire sports programs at UT had gotten just too soft. Maybe this will do wonders.

More than anything, thank GOD they passed on Jim Mora, Jr. The quitter. I'll never think well of that jerk who simply walked out on the Falcons in the middle of a season. Wow.

He needs To find a good QB,Texas Qbs have been pathetic recently.

Jerrod Heard is actually better than anyone they've recruited since David Ash.
He is FAR better than Swopes who was a mediocre 2A guy that looked like mess in all-star games.

Heard has actually been coached and cam both throw and run.
He is the real deal.

Of recent state of Texas QBs he's the guy.

All that said Strong may well grab a top notch JUCO so heard can redshirt while Ash and a JUCO battle.

Heard Louisville broadcaster on radio said main thing he brings is toughness.
Florida ST was scared to death he'd end up at Florida.

He is very old school in his football desires, likes 6-3 wins more than 50-40.
Pulled Bridgewater away from Bama/Florida.
Very good recruiter.

Held team meeting today for players who could get there.
Lady in the office next to me said her husband was driving her former 5 star OT son to Austin this morning for that meeting.
He was most excited about the strength guy that works for Strong.
He's staying in Austin the rest of break to go to work.

I did not know that about Mora & I live in ATL. Not long but I have never heard that!

It's not right to judge people on looks but my first thought when I saw him was he was a tough guy. Hard nosed. I'm very impressed by all I have read on him since the hire.

I believe you're talking about Bob Petrino.

This was my pick although I don't follow Texas like some here do. He was the DC at SC and was loved. Can't say enough nice things about this guy. Congrats Texas!

You know, there is a kid here in Albuquerque, Zach Gentry, who is being recruited by Louisville. He's a big kid, plays QB. He goes about 6'6" 230 lbs. and he has an arm. He can move around in the pocket and the HS he plays for, Eldorado High School, who's colors just happen to be Texas Burnt Orange and White.

His Grandfather was Bill Gentry, who was my HS Football Coach.

Don't be surprised if Texas doesn't offer him in the CLASS of 2015.

That's a big kid for high school!

He is a Byron Leftwich type. I think he goes to Tennessee. Good prospect.
Would like to get him to Texas Tech which is probably the best program close to home.
