As an avid Wade Phillips fan, I can say that most of my love for this team's current success goes out to him and the players he coaches. But I really am thankful that Bill Parcells came along when he did. We may have missed out having Sean Peyton as our coach, but Peyton was only here because of Parcells.

I know he didn't do everything perfectly here. And to be truthful I'm glad he's gone.

I love what Wade Phillips does with this team. I liked Wade coming into this season. I promoted him in a positive manner because I think he's an effective coach. His history speaks for itself, always has. The post-season knock on him was uncalled for. Statistically, you can't win them all. So Wade has lost a few playoff games, including one this year.

But you have to give today's success to two guys. If it wasn't for Parcells, Romo may not even be here. Think about that for one moment. We'd probably be sitting here kicking our backsides because we let him go or tried to squeeze him to the practice squad.

Parcells brought in players like Ware, Newman, Ratliff and Witten--all staples of success in Big D's current success, if you let me call it that.

I'm often hard on the guy because he's so abrasive and I didn't care for how he chose to depart from Dallas. It was sad to watch the game pass a great coach like Parcells behind. The guy had a great eye for personnel.

I was glad to see him come when he came and glad to see him go when he left. But in my daily pondering of the Dallas Cowboys I often forget to be thankful for the coach who turned the franchise around. Yes, I know we haven't won a Super Bowl in well over a decade. But ask yourself if that's a reasonable expectation when this team just got moving in the right direction 4 or so years ago.

It's not.

Bill Parcells got us going in the right direction. From there Wade has been a pretty good bus driver. And I think that's what you really need in a coach. Parcells was the victim of his old cliche'. He was the head coach of the team and had all the players riding on his rig, but he just wasn't a good bus driver.

He was, however, a great talent for finding personnel. And for that I thank him for. Hats of to the sour-faced yankee. He did a good job bringing in guys like Peyton for Romo to learn from. He created a foundation of players that I think can win a Superbowl.

Given the torch has been passed on to Wade Phillips, I think our team has a good chance of winning more than one game in the playoffs and perhaps even making a Super Bowl appearance.

It's no guarantee. But I'd say our present team, in all of its facets, is a better team (in terms of personnel) than the vast majority of NFL teams.

With our talent, and Wade's ability to win we have a good chance--a considerably better chance than most teams going into next year.

The evolution of this team, which began to for during the Parcells era, is going to be interesting to watch. And I'm proud to be a fan.

I agree 100%.

If it wasn't for Adams getting injured in his 3rd year or some defensive players losing faith in his and Zimmer's system in the 4th year I think he would of have a couple playoff wins under his belt.

Actually, Payton was the guy that wanted Romo here. And when we were on the clock with the pick that we took Ware, Parcells wanted to draft Spears instead. Jerry went with the scouts and drafted Ware instead, because they believed Ware was a great talent, and we could get Spears with the other pick. Not that Parcells didn't tremendously help this team, but some players are here because of others.

+1.

Personally, I'm glas Parcells is gone. He is overrated as a coach, IMO. His record without Belichick on his staff speaks for itself. I also think his eye for talent is overrated.

Having said that, I think Parcells greatest quality is that he changes cultures. He demands respect from players. And he has this aura about him where players would run through walls for him.

I'm happy that he came when he did. The team desperately needed it. But I also took solace in that Seattle game as I knew it meant the end of the Parcells era.

brian broaddus was in the room and parcells wanted merriman. Stephen and jerry pulled bill aside and explain how he would never get to camp on time and would always be a problem on the business side because of his agents the poston brothers.

according to broaddus bill then wanted to go with ware like most did.

Why this keeps getting screwed up I dont know, but just to be clear, He wanted spears sure.to run the 3-4 in 05 we needed an end but parcells wanted to take merriman at 11.

and you cant blame bill for wanting spears at 20, he had great success with another end from lsu once upon a time named leonard marshall. When you have an end in a 2 gap 3-4 who is among the league leaders in sacks a couple of years like marshall was I am pretty sure you would want another one!!!

The only negative I have against The Tuna is that he has such a strong and commanding precense that leadership among the players did not blossom because the players looked to him to provide it. The players were accountable to him. Wade has stepped back and made the players acountable to each other. And thanks to Brookings, Romo, James, and Ware seem to have stepped up as the leaders.

Amen.

Once the word got out that Merriman was thinking of the Postons he was out of the discussion. I have heard from various sources that that word got out before the draft-but never really knew for sure. One must also remember that before ware tore it up at the combine he was a late first pick. Going to a small school and looking at a position change its not that surprising. Spears was from a big time program and was a natural 3-4 DE which we really needed if we wanted to switch to the 3-4. BP was worried some other team would go for spears before we could get to him.

How many SBs has Bellichek won since Crennel and Weis left? How many did he win with them on his staff? And arguably until the last year or so the Pats had more talent now then back then.

He definitely turned things around. Before he came our team was a joke.

Winning cures all. Nothing against CC but would this thread come about if we were injury plagued and had a 6-10 record?

That argument doesn't hold water.

First off, Bellichek still has a strong regular season record without those assistants. Secondly, he has won in the post season without them. And he has taken the Patriots to the Super Bowl without them.

Secondly, neither Weis nor Crennel have proven to be worth a damn since leaving Bellicheck, so that really just further strengthens the argument for what a good coach Little Bill is.

Parcells is a .500 coach without Little Bill. He has a poor playoff record without Little Bill. And he certainly has never even sniffed the Super Bowl without Little Bill.

I think Parcells is a good coach but I do think he is overrated...
He was just so conservative. Every game came down to the last 2 minutes of the game with him as our coach. You live like that in today's NFL and you will lose your fair share of games. That playoff game against the Seahawks Parcells conservative approach cost us a chance to put away the Seahawks in my opinion.
3rd and short with us right on the fringe of field goal range and he takes a timeout. We were ahead at the time I believe...He runs a dive play to Barber and Seattle sells out on a run blitz and we lose 3 yards...I thought that was the turning point in that game.
We were on the road it was a playoff game...we should have "hit the gorilla in the mouth" as Jimmy Johnson use to say but instead we played not to lose and that was a problem I had with Parcells approach towards the end.

Parcells style is antiquated, and he never showed the ability to adjust. He wasn't able to evolve with the game.

There's a reason why his greatest successes came in the 1980's, and he had less and less success with each subsequent stop. He won two Super Bowls with the Giants. He lost a Super Bowl with the Patriots. He lost the AFC Championships with the Jets. And he wasn't even able to win a playoff game or division title in 4 years with Dallas.

If you watched the Cowboys games during his tenure, you saw him being loyal to a fault to his "guys". You saw the Cowboys get easily outcoached/outschemed week to week.

I'll never forget teams always spreading us out with multiple receivers, and us staying in the base 3-4.

Parcells is your typical 1980's NFL coach. Too old and too stubborn to adjust to todays pass crazy NFL.

I don't, but that's not what I was trying to say anyway.

Yeah, we got both of them. The guy was trying to build a 3-4 defense. What we needed was an OLB, speed pass-rusher. Merriman was the hot item, we chose Ware. Parcells said he reminded him of LT. And I think both of Ware and Spears play well together. Some may says Spears is overrated, but I think he's done a solid job here. I will also say they took Spears because Parcells took a risk, and Ware was still there when we grabbed him.

So for that I'm appreciative. But as was said, in terms of his ability to keep up with the game, he just didn't cut it.
