As an avid Wade Phillips fan, I can say that most of my love for this team's current success goes out to him and the players he coaches. But I really am thankful that Bill Parcells came along when he did. We may have missed out having Sean Peyton as our coach, but Peyton was only here because of Parcells.
I know he didn't do everything perfectly here. And to be truthful I'm glad he's gone.
I love what Wade Phillips does with this team. I liked Wade coming into this season. I promoted him in a positive manner because I think he's an effective coach. His history speaks for itself, always has. The post-season knock on him was uncalled for. Statistically, you can't win them all. So Wade has lost a few playoff games, including one this year.
But you have to give today's success to two guys. If it wasn't for Parcells, Romo may not even be here. Think about that for one moment. We'd probably be sitting here kicking our backsides because we let him go or tried to squeeze him to the practice squad.
Parcells brought in players like Ware, Newman, Ratliff and Witten--all staples of success in Big D's current success, if you let me call it that.
I'm often hard on the guy because he's so abrasive and I didn't care for how he chose to depart from Dallas. It was sad to watch the game pass a great coach like Parcells behind. The guy had a great eye for personnel.
I was glad to see him come when he came and glad to see him go when he left. But in my daily pondering of the Dallas Cowboys I often forget to be thankful for the coach who turned the franchise around. Yes, I know we haven't won a Super Bowl in well over a decade. But ask yourself if that's a reasonable expectation when this team just got moving in the right direction 4 or so years ago.
It's not.
Bill Parcells got us going in the right direction. From there Wade has been a pretty good bus driver. And I think that's what you really need in a coach. Parcells was the victim of his old cliche'. He was the head coach of the team and had all the players riding on his rig, but he just wasn't a good bus driver.
He was, however, a great talent for finding personnel. And for that I thank him for. Hats of to the sour-faced yankee. He did a good job bringing in guys like Peyton for Romo to learn from. He created a foundation of players that I think can win a Superbowl.
Given the torch has been passed on to Wade Phillips, I think our team has a good chance of winning more than one game in the playoffs and perhaps even making a Super Bowl appearance.
It's no guarantee. But I'd say our present team, in all of its facets, is a better team (in terms of personnel) than the vast majority of NFL teams.
With our talent, and Wade's ability to win we have a good chance--a considerably better chance than most teams going into next year.
The evolution of this team, which began to for during the Parcells era, is going to be interesting to watch. And I'm proud to be a fan.
