For pushing out an automatic update of internet exploder 9 and making my life a living hell. :laugh2:

For the past two weeks I have been having to uninstall this crap.

And yes I know it can be blocked by a group policy but these computers aren't on our domain. :(

Disable auto update on those PCs numskull. ;)

...either that or edit the local policies on those PCs. Just create a reg file and run it on all of them.

I updated to IE9 on my old laptop and I hated it. On my new laptop, I have IE8, so I'm going to stick to it as long as possible.

If it were only that simple. I'm talking about 500+ computers. I found a blocker on the MS website so when I run in to it again I can block it. Only problem is doing it on every single pc. :banghead:

The only thing I use IE for is updates and downloading firefox :D

Manage your own updates. :D We used to SUS update our clients from our own SUS servers. Now we have LANdesk manage all update that we release 1x each week depending on level of security concerns/patch concerns.

My guys use it for pretty much everything (remote client support-inventory-some purchasing even-patch management-software pulls etc..). Great tool!

Sorry Ole Microsoft is giving you the business, Yeag.

We were just discussing making FireFox our state standard just yesterday, but there are some concerns we have w/ that browser as well as far as support and how MOZ updates it.

Why on earth are you guys using IE? I hope it's because you have to...

IE can be bad and have problems, just like Mozilla can be bad and have problems, as can Chrome. It all depends on the application. All of these browsers can and do have issues w/ tons of our vendor apps and portal software. Not working stopping issues, but definitely buggy stuff that pops up each time you open a session. Some you can deal with and some you try a diff browser.

I run 4 browsers here on this workstation, only because some are better w/ some apps and some are better with other apps.

I like IE.. So I use it cuz I want to.

However, I use FireFox because some apps I use don't work well or don't work at all in IE.

I also use it when I do my side web design work.

Trick uses firefox :D

IE9 took me some time to get used to. i miss a seperate search box vs. just searching in the address line but i've gotten used to it. now when i use another browser i hate having to go to a different box.

another feature i do like about IE9 is i can pull a tab into it's own browser and away from a multi-tabbed window.

i just don't get into the browser wars. the only time i really use FF is when something isn't working in IE and i need to see if page or browser.

and why would i EVER use chrome? google is very bad about tracking your every move and pushing ads into your face at twice the opportunity that makes me mad to begin with.

Quit using IE years ago.

At first I think I switched to opera, firefox and such just because they were new and something different.

However after some time I got to the point where I noticed a LARGE amount of difference in load times from IE and the others.

I notice it the most when the wife is searching for something and would ask for help in finding something. I would notice how slow it would load many pages compared to firefox or google. Firefox was starting to bog down on the load times there for some time but it seemed they have corrected the problem.

There are rare times when I had to use IE at work as some of the states sites were just not completely compatible for anything other than IE but have changed (or the google browser itself changed) so that even some of those work in chrome now.

I think for the most part that people are creatures of habit. They get used to using one browser and just don't see the need to change. Some people like newer things and try them out.

I have to say though that if someone gave other browsers a legit chance for a period of time without using IE and they later go back to use IE they would see how much slower it is.

I finally got the wife to start using other browsers as i got tired of dealing with IE when she was looking for something. Now I don't have to even bother with that much since she got an IPAD as she rarely ever uses the computer at all now.

I will tell you another benefit to having more than one browser on your computer. Sometimes when you get a virus it will set things up so if you search for something (malware bytes or other helpful programs/links) if you try searching for the same things in another browser it might let you get to them.
One of them will not work if IE is like that but the other one will...I just can not remember which one worked or would not work.

Dear god why are you managing 500+ desktops without a domain or WSUS for that matter?!?!?!

Even if you have to create a separate domain for these PCs that say only have guest log-ins. Domain + WSUS and you can completely control all updates.

Because I work for an apartment company and we have 160+ communities spread out across the US. Some of the offices have one or two computers some have 10 or more depending on the size of the property.

You do you have a VPN to each location? If so , then you should be able to setup a dummy domain for them to control updates via group policy, but WSUS wouldn't be an option.

Ugh, that sucks. I will stick to working in server room. :laugh2:

The chiefs didn't want to go that route. So we Indians have to deal with it. :(

You should have replied, "Well, we don't want to go your route!" :laugh2:

Coup!

He could do sccm though and put a pc out and push updates down late night to the remote sccm box. We did this for our remote clinics that have bandwith issues and then we can update them from local reducing network traffic.

I am with you I prefer infrastructure and working the server room.

Quick question for you Sam. Have you guys upgrade to VMware 5 yet ? We just started last night updated are Vcenter server last night to VMare 5 and will start the ESX host next week
