Thank you, Will McClay

It's impossible to thank McClay and not give credit to the Jones family.

1. They gave McClay the job in Dallas
2. They helped McClay get started in professional sports-w/Desperados Arena League Team

We have indeed been placed into an incredibly strong position thanks mostly to the yeoman's work of Mr. McClay. Perhaps one day Jerruh will legitimately recognize his work and make him GM.
But for some that's not good enough, I can't believe some of the posters here. Know what when I see idiotic posts, I won't bother to respond.

I seen somewhere and not sure if any posted this, but right now our ENTIRE starting defense are all draft picks/undrafted rookie free agents maybe besides one DT Woods and that depends on if you are going with Woods over Collins. That is absolutely insane. What is even more insane is this:

All our CBs are through the draft
All our DEs are also through the draft
5 out of 7 LBs are through the draft
3 out of 4 safteys on the roster are also drafted/unsigned rookie FA
2 out of 6 DT come from the draft with the other 4 basically cast offs that nobody else wanted. One of them elite "when" available in Irving and another in Woods who has made an impact in stopping the run up front. I have no problem crediting McClay with finding small gems since most of these guys are young players they evaluated as draft picks. On a side not I am happy we do not waste top 3 picks on a 2 down unstopper unlike a lot of members on here who would prefer that. Unless someone is elite, these guys can be found and are plug and play like an Antwan Woods.

Then you could look to the offensive side of the ball as well

All 3 QBs drafted/UFA rookie
RB Zeke and Rod Smith was a great find by McClay. Also had the balls to take the best player available in the draft in 2016. Not saying that Goff and Wentz aren't more important to an organization but we took the best player available and the best rated player of anyone in that draft.
OLine Next year if T Fred comes back and Connor bulks up our entire offensive line drafted/UFA rookie
TEs might be lacking since Witten left unexpectedly but again Drafted/UFA rookie
WRs 3 drafted and one a big trade which I didn't like the compensation but so far it has proven to be the right more. The lone strike out for McClay was the Hurns signing but we all knew it was a reach, the deal wasn't that bad and nobody is anywhere near perfect with FA signings, see Brian Cashman.

We can all sit here and credit Lawrence, LVE, Zeke, Amari, Kris Richard and others but without this guy drafting, trading and finding guys like Irving, Sua-Filo, Woods none of this would be possible. Also major props for holding off on the ET trade. Most likely he will be here next year anyways and if we did deal him for a 2019 2nd then there is no way Amari is here and I honestly believe that our record might be the other way around if that was the case.

Remember he is doing ALL OF THIS with a senile owner and his son Stephen (who I actually give credit as the middle man between McClays smarts and the old mans stupidity), a Head Coach who still needs a ton of seasoning and a TERRIBLE offensive coordinator. To deal with the likes of JJ, SJ, JG and SL and still be able to put that product on the field is absolutely amazing!

THANK YOU Will McClay!!!!
Here, Here!!!!!
We would be smart to lock this dude up to a rich, long contract

Antwan Woods and other former DTs are the reason the Cowboys WILL NOT draft DT high. They believe, and have proven, that you can find one in the lower rounds (Lett, Ratliff) or bring in a serviceable cast off. So... Vea was never happening and I'm fine with that. As the OP stated: McClay is crushing it.

Just look at all the guys on defense...job well done.

They have been proven right. How many top DT's end up being worth their draft position? Off the top I think of Fletcher Cox and Aaron Donald.

Agreed. I dont even know how recent zone darling Vea is doing.

Not to take away from the job McClay has done with scouting college players but you do realize that if you don't sign unrestricted free agents, that your own drafted players and undrafted free agents will start because they are not competing against anyone.

Hey, all of our strayers are our own guys.

What other guys did you bring into compete against them?

None.

Oh.

Last I heard he was struggling........which you know its early to write him off but the way people talked about him.....I heard a lot of people said he'd come right in and have a impact.

Uhhhh....what? So wait...you think just because you start guys that means they can just play lol? They aren't bringing guys in here because they have a confidence in their scouts and youth. And as of now its been proven right if it keeps up.

Can't keep ignoring free agents. Build through the draft but use free agency to address needs and upgrade positions.

We have a ton of talent, a lot of it is young talent too. However, we may have the worst starting safeties and overall tight end group in the NFL. Smart teams use free agency and the draft. As do Super Bowl teams.

I like responding. It let's them know I know what they're thinking.:popcorn:

(which usually doesn't amount to much)

They are ignoring are ignoring free agents because free agents suck. Free agents are players other teams didn't want or don't feel they are worth paying.

Now what you want to do is fill in pieces here and there which is what they did. Some moves didn't work as well as others but that's the price you pay when you play that free agency game.

They have had injuries and a lot of those guys that are starting for them were free agents. Sua Filo was a free agent. Joe Looney was a free agent. They signed Joe Thomas this year. Cameron Fleming this year. Antuan Woods was a free agent. They tried to overpay for Sammy Watkins and thankfully they failed.

Cowboys just brought in a free agent. Cooper.

It’s not so black and white.

There are a lot of reasons that players hit free agency. It’s not always because “they suck”

Was a trade.

but if his impact causes them to rethink their stance on adding outside talent, I'm all for it.

This off-season will be huge. They finally have cap room and we will be coming off a likely playoff appearance. We will see if they decide to add talent via free agency, especially since they don't have a 1st round pick. I'm not talking throw caution out the window, off-season champions approach to free agency. Just adding two or three strategic and impactful players that make us better.

Which is why I said:

"Free agents are players other teams didn't want or don't feel they are worth paying."

Free agency sucks. I want no part of it. I'm fine with making moves here and there for depth purposes. But I'm not overpaying for a aged veteran or a guy who's not good to begin with.

Fact is, All Pro players aren't available in free agency. And if they are...they aren't worth the money.

They aren't spending money this free agency either and probably shouldn't. They have too many guys coming up from Dak, Lawrence, Byron, Zeke, Jaylon.........if they sign anyone I could see a one year deal or something short term. Not only that but this free agency class is suppose to be even worse then normal.
